Fear memory and expression relies on the coordinated activity in the mPFC and BLA. The joint respiratory modulation of prefrontal and amygdala circuits might contribute to this coordination during fear behavior.

Learning how to do science is a mysterious, ineffable process where you must spend a lot of time hanging out with someone who knows the ropes and other people who also want to know the ropes. It is only through this process that you can hone your intuitions, your most precious research abilities. Science must be expressed honestly, in the voice of the person who did the work, in words that any interested person can understand, and in a place where they can access it. It is only through this freedom that you can fully cultivate your ideas.

Quick thoughts on research
PhD students often think their advisors will help them with how to solve a problem, but the much more important thing they do is help them find problems which: (a) are tractable; (b) of some importance; (c) will help them develop; and (d) help them know what to ignore.
Quick thoughts on research
Cynicism about your work is incredibly destructive. If you find yourself getting cynical, be prepared to make drastic changes to your environment. Start small, but: change supervisor, change city, change field, do something. Ditto burnout, though for different reasons.

This seems great and peaceful, though you notice their toes have grown wide and strong - too big to fit comfortably into storebought shoes anymore. You wonder if being barefoot so long has actually made it harder to find shoes that don’t hurt.

They’ve all done things, often beautiful things, in a context that was already set out before them, which they had no inclination to disturb. Without being aware of it, they’ve remained prisoners of those invisible and despotic circles which delimit the universe of a certain milieu in a given era. To have broken these bounds they would have had to rediscover in themselves that capability which was their birth-right, as it was mine: the capacity to be alone.

When I clash with people, it’s also about how they see the world. The degree of idealism, the degree of pragmatism, the degree of agency. How loving a person should be, what it means to be loving, what it means to be ethical. What they read and what they don’t.
