Stanford and Startup Theatre - In Pursuit of WisdomThe best engineers see Stanford’s business clubs as flashy, full of those who signal potential without real underlying competency. They want no role in this adulterated ecosystem, as such, there is no place where they can pitch each other their thesis and proceed to have them ripped apart.
Stanford and Startup Theatre - In Pursuit of WisdomWithout sleep, you can’t form or maintain the pathways in your brain that let you learn and create new memories
Brain Basics: Understanding Sleep | National Institute of Neurological Disorders and StrokeThe growth of both government and commercial orbital rendezvous capability creates the possibility of standardized inspection protocols.
Modern arms control verification for the Outer Space Treaty - Bulletin of the Atomic ScientistsRoughly 90 percent of today’s satellites operate in low Earth orbit, most of them launched by commercial companies that have moved away from costly radiation hardening in favor of cheaper, less resilient components. A Defense Threat Reduction Agency study found that a single low-yield nuclear explosion at high altitude could disable “all LEO satellites not specifically hardened to withstand radiation” within weeks to months. Such an attack would be catastrophic for global infrastructure.
Modern arms control verification for the Outer Space Treaty - Bulletin of the Atomic Scientistsn 2024, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan publicly asserted that Russia is developing a nuclear anti-satellite weapon in violation of the Outer Space Treaty (an assertion that Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied).
Modern arms control verification for the Outer Space Treaty - Bulletin of the Atomic ScientistsWhat would incentivize a program to deliver faster or cheaper than planned? From experience: Nothing. Anything that disrupts the plan is the enemy of the monopsonist

The False Promises of Wellness Culture - JSTOR DailyThe aesthetic ideal of the lean, muscular body may derive from Greek antiquity, but it was life reformers who turned the well-cared-for physique into a virtue, Hau explains. Good health became synonymous with beauty and self-fulfillment.
The False Promises of Wellness Culture - JSTOR DailyDunn defined “high-level wellness,” the organizing principle behind his work, as “a condition of change in which the individual moves forward, climbing toward a higher potential of functioning.”
The False Promises of Wellness Culture - JSTOR DailyEmployee opposition to working in warfare (most palpable during walkouts at Google in 2018) softened for some when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022

RoboBees: Autonomous Flying MicrorobotsIn the same way that underlying improvements in GPUs paved the way for the “killer app” of ChatGPT, we believe that blockchain infrastructure may soon enable the advent of a “killer app” in the crypto space, one that serves as an “iPhone moment” in its significance for wider adoption

#35 - Read Write Own - by Stanford Blockchain Clubcrypto can be characterized as having two distinct cultures: the “computer” and the “casino.” The “computer culture” represents the developers, entrepreneurs, and visionaries that can situate “crypto” within the broader history of the Internet and understand blockchains’ technological significance in the long run. On the other hand, the “casino” culture is much more focused on short-term gains and profiting from price fluctuations.

This is Water by David Foster Wallace (Full Transcript and Audio) - Farnam StreetThink about it: there is no experience you have had that you are not the absolute centre of. The world as you experience it is there in front of YOU or behind YOU, to the left or right of YOU, on YOUR TV or YOUR monitor
This is Water by David Foster Wallace (Full Transcript and Audio) - Farnam StreetSpinors, on the other hand, are constructed in such a way that makes them sensitive to how the gradual rotation of the coordinates arrived there: They exhibit path-dependence.
Spinorspinors are essential to describe the intrinsic angular momentum, or "spin", of the electron and other subatomic particles
SpinorIn the third act, Irina understands that in fact there is no direct connection between work and happiness: she works in the city council, classes her service and feels that in recent years she has only moved away from the beautiful life of which she has dreamed of so much
Three SistersThe move to Moscow is the cherished dream of several characters of the play and one of its thematic refruits.
Three Sistersplaywright first of all wanted to avoid excessive exaltation in the performance
Three SistersAs a result of repeated and negliab rewriting of the original by a copyist of the Moscow Art Theater in the journal publication of the "Three Sisters" got more than two hundred distortions, not counting punctuation, - especially got the third and fourth action, which Chekhov sent to the theater from abroad.
Three SistersYears pass between the actions, but the reader, immersed in the household routine of the Prozor house, may not notice this: the same circle of people leads similar conversations, langeful from boredom
Three SistersChekhov strives for the most natural reproduction of human speech and behavior: the characters interrupt each other, not to place and inadvertently quote classical works or simply do not hear interlocutors; on stage they do not commit sharp, irreversible actions, but all the time they are preparing for something, doubted, endlessly shaking and thinking.
Three SistersHe was afraid that he could not cope with such a large - 14 - the number of characters: "I am writing not a play, but some kind of confusion. A lot of actors – it’s possible that I’ll get confused and I’m going to write.”

Stanford Blockchain Club - Crypto Reading ListMy dad said that leaving the confined context of a job made him understand himself not in relation to that world, but just to the world, and forever after that, things that happened at work only seemed like one small part of something much larger.

The Project Gutenberg eBook of The Souls of Black Folk, by W. E. B. Du BoisBut these builders did make a mistake in minimizing the gravity of the problem before them; in thinking it a matter of years and decades; in therefore building quickly and laying their foundation carelessly, and lowering the standard of knowing, until they had scattered haphazard through the South some dozen poorly equipped high schools and miscalled them universities.

arden (@arden_eth) / XZero knowledge proofs are key here in expanding the scope of what such a stack can offer: we can get beyond the false binary of "anonymous and therefore untrusted" vs "verified and KYC'd", and prove much more fine-grained statements about who we are and what permissions we have.
The end of my childhoodEthereum community should expand its horizons. We should create an entire decentralized tech stack - a stack that is independent from the traditional Silicon Valley tech stack to the same extent that eg. the Chinese tech stack is - and compete with centralized tech companies at every level.
The end of my childhoodDoing nothing, or living on autopilot and letting myself simply become part of the plans of others, is not an automatically safe, or even blameless, course of action.
The end of my childhoodPeople looking at me from afar often think of me as a high-agency person, presumably because this is what you would expect of a "main character" or a "project founder" who "dropped out of college". In reality, however, I was anything but. The virtue I valorized as a kid was not the virtue of creativity in starting a unique new project, or the virtue of showing bravery in a once-in-a-generation moment that calls for it, but rather the virtue of being a good student who shows up on time, does his homework and gets a 99 percent average.
The end of my childhoodAt the time, someone posted on Twitter a long list of "crypto main characters", showing which ones had fallen and which ones were still intact. The casualty rate was massive
The end of my childhoodmodern AI is that it lets us mathematically and philosophically engage with the hidden variables guiding human interaction in a different way: AI can make "vibes" legible.
The end of my childhoodRegardless of whether our lives as a whole are finite or infinite, every single beautiful thing in our lives is finite
The end of my childhoodThe children thought lions, and there were lions. The children thought zebras, and there were zebras. Sun — sun. Giraffes — giraffes. Death and death.
