1) someone that you will find fascinating to talk to after you’ve talked for 20,000 hours, 2) you feel comfortable with them talking through the hardest and most painful decisions you will face in your life, and 3) the conversation is wildly generative for both of you, in that it brings you out, helps you become
Looking for Alice - by Henrik Karlsson - Escaping FlatlandThere is a trope in romance that when you meet the person you are supposed to be with, you can talk about anything. You can apparently inverse that too: if you talk about anything that pops into your mind, you can tell if you're supposed to be with the person by judging their reaction
Looking for Alice - by Henrik Karlsson - Escaping FlatlandI hope I always remember how lucky I am to argue with you, to watch our relationship change and warp and deepen. For something to change, for something to age, means that it still exists.
to be loved is to be changed - by Ava - bookbear expressIndependence won’t save us from having to depend on others.
to be loved is to be changed - by Ava - bookbear expresssense of obligation was often how I ducked out of recognizing where I actually was, what I actually felt.
to be loved is to be changed - by Ava - bookbear expressI am familiar with the language of anxiety and avoidance but I don’t reference those terms anymore, really. I know now that the most important thing I can do is to give love and accept love in a way that feels earnest.
to be loved is to be changed - by Ava - bookbear expressThere’s poetry in doing something over and over again not because it makes you better, but because the effort makes you feel alive.
sunset mindset - by sophie - from florencethe idea of a ritual is that you’re not really going anywhere in particular. The ritual is meditation because you return in search of understanding — not to grow yourself but to know yourself. There is no destination and no outcome, because the love is in the doing.
sunset mindset - by sophie - from florenceafter subjecting myself to a period of discomfort, my conception of what I enjoyed permanently changed.
On continually renegotiating your identitychildhood is more fraught and more intense in every important way. Childhood makes us: it's when we learn how to attach to people, and develop our deepest traumas; it's when we develop a formative view of the world that often shapes our expectations for the rest of our life
on obsessionIntimacy is fantasy translated to tenuous reality, intimacy is deeply unstable, intimacy shifts under our feet, intimacy betrays us and we allow it.
notes on intimacyWe're all kids frozen by attachment trauma, longing to return to open wonder, harboring tender fantasies of the good life.
notes on intimacyI would believe what you do is all about you and not about me. If I could live this way, love would not be consolation: love would be light.
notes on intimacyMurakami: "But I didn't understand then. That I could hurt somebody so badly she would never recover. That a person can, just by living, damage another human being beyond repair.”
notes on intimacythe problem with telling a story about love is that the harder you try to tell it accurately the further away you get from anything that feels true.
against narrative - by rayne fisher-quannThe rewards of feeling, it turns out, are the same as the punishments: we are forced to experience immediately what we have. This is a dangerous project — one that imbues the world with a violence and a volume that extend indiscriminately in all moral directions — but one that nonetheless also allows us to live. It is worth it, I think, to approach the unbearable. It is worth it to endure it all.
against narrative - by rayne fisher-quannif love has taught us anything, it’s that there are things known to the body that cannot be grasped by the mind.
against narrative - by rayne fisher-quannTo love someone, after all, is absurd: it humiliates you, it debases you, it removes you from yourself, it leaves you as alienated from your own thoughts and actions and impulses as you might be from a stranger’s, it takes your organs out of your body and forces you to watch them sleep
against narrative - by rayne fisher-quannTo have total control over my life would be a miracle; to have none at all would at the very least offer me a kind of entropic relief. I was, as usual, stuck in the perilous middle.
against narrative - by rayne fisher-quannOur breakup was so protracted, in part, because our story was so, so good, and I wanted so badly for the story of our relationship to be the story of my life
against narrative - by rayne fisher-quannI didn’t love him so that I could hold anything in my hand at the end of it. I loved him because I had something to say
against narrative - by rayne fisher-quannHunger, for all its discomfort, is just a special kind of hope.
all's unfair in love - by john d. zhang - ordinary instantslove is least rewarding when we treat it like a sport, in which we can optimize outcomes by holding ourselves to a demanding set of requirements and judging potential partners in the same way
all's unfair in love - by john d. zhang - ordinary instantsMost of the time I’m wanting to be somewhere else, even when I’m right here with me.
On making it special - by eliza mclamb - words from elizaIf you have ever been a lonely child, part of you stays her forever. A void opens up inside you when you are very small and then mocks you all your life for being unable to fill it. No number of friends or strength of love can fill it; the well is bottomless.
i have friends, i definitely have friendsWhat I also have, though, is a tendency to think about my friendships like I’m about to be audited for evidence that I have them.
i have friends, i definitely have friendsI am no longer new to the world; if this were a coming-of-age film, the credits would be rolling by now
i have friends, i definitely have friendsBut even now, I can’t quite accept that I get to love, and to be loved, by people who feel like home. That I am still loved, even if I haven’t seen someone in a couple of months, or if the shape of our friendship is changing. I still have a distinct sense that my childhood loneliness was actually my default, that anything else since has been a fluke, and will one day come to an end. I can’t quite accept what I deserve - what we all deserve.
i have friends, i definitely have friendsIt moved me to realize that I could still feel this way. So embarrassed and giddy and hopeless.
#56: tall child - by CHARLOTTE MUTH - Insecure TeaA quarter life of never acting my age, perpetually too young and too old.
#56: tall child - by CHARLOTTE MUTH - Insecure TeaIs there something you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?
Real Conversation QuestionsRemember how free adults seemed when you were a child? Why do you now view the children as free? Is freedom an illusion of being in a body that's not present?
Am I a Fucking Grown Woman? - by sarah gwenfriendship is a form of redemption because even if work goes wrong and your boyfriend dumps you if you have people who believe you’re going to be okay you believe that you’re going to be okay
the friendship theory of everythingSo much of happiness is having someone you can get a last-minute dinner with on a Monday night, or ask to water your plants while you’re gone for a week. The opposite of loneliness, as it were.
the friendship theory of everythingPeople choose places; places shape people; people go on to shape other people. We should be thoughtful about the kind of transformation we opt into.
the friendship theory of everythingposting on social media can feel disgusting because it’s hard to compress our lives into a reel, a caption, or a blog post: we can’t dissect our complex and intricate existence into bite-sized easily digestible pieces of content
why is posting on social media exhausting? - by ValerieWriting is about getting to the truth of the matter. It’s much harder than it sounds because you’re constantly trying to overcome the urge to deflect and avoid the truth.
craft and beauty - by Elaine - manners & mysteryYou can only hack something if the output is all that matters. But creative work is about the process more than the results
craft and beauty - by Elaine - manners & mysteryEarlier this year I felt a little manic and anxious. I can do everything! What do I do? More recently my mind is quiet and clear. I can only do a few things. What do I choose?
what's a good commitment? - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixI just can't seem to do that anymore, I don’t care about efficiency. I care far too much about people, and many other nominally wrong things.
65% sure confessions - by jaron - the way homethe more we encourage ourselves and each other to live lives of reflective isolation, the more scared we become of stimuli that cannot be controlled
A Culture of Introspective Captivity - by P.E. Moskowitzintrospection can become somewhat of a trap—a system by which you control yourself so that you do not disturb the peace of the world outside of you
A Culture of Introspective Captivity - by P.E. MoskowitzParadise and perfection are boring; being good despite the circumstances is boring and dishonest. I want to be a full person with all the wrinkles of a life well-lived.
Good Girl - by Michelle Albanes-Davis - Stir the PotI still feel a spark of shame writing that I often need nine hours in bed to feel great. But that shame is completely unproductive and doesn’t change my reality, which has been lifelong and is not going to change, ever. My life is much, much better when I sleep a lot, and that’s that.
I need nine hours of sleep - by Rachel KatzCreating art is empowering because it is a process so unlike living; it would be so easy if all our feelings and experiences were nameable and photographable and capturable and framable and shareable.
Objectifying Expression - by charlie squire - evil femaleBottom-up propensities in the form of feelings and inherent values influence morality, but they are not necessarily reflective of the values a society would recognize as moral values.

A Conceptual and Computational Model of Moral Decision Making in Human and Artificial Agents - Wallach - 2010 - Topics in Cognitive Science - Wiley Online LibraryMany ethical decisions require having to select an action when information is unclear, incomplete, confusing, and even false, where the possible results of an action cannot be predicted with any significant degree of certainty, and where conflicting values can inform the decision-making process.
A Conceptual and Computational Model of Moral Decision Making in Human and Artificial Agents - Wallach - 2010 - Topics in Cognitive Science - Wiley Online Libraryit is feasible to design systems that try to emulate the current best understanding of human faculties, even if those systems do not perform exactly as the brain functions.
