Building Tall, Institutions - by DavidXYu - XY-WiseHowever, to do so, there are two interrelated challenges to overcome. All the more challenging when the more “tall” a subject is, the more difficult these challenges become.
Building Tall, Institutions - by DavidXYu - XY-WiseThe trade-off here, is that a reductive/simple metric is easy to measure but lossy in signal, but a more abstract/tall metric contains high signal though usually at the cost of measurability.
Building Tall, Institutions - by DavidXYu - XY-WiseCollege applications generally seek more than just a transcript to summarize one’s learnedness. Descriptions of extracurricular distinctions and personal essays of hopes and dreams are an increasingly common part of the admission process.

Even artichokes have doubts - Yale Daily News“not sound like a douche bag.” Either he’d come off as pompous for sounding excited about his future job or superior for sounding too good for it.
Even artichokes have doubts - Yale Daily NewsWe’re told a lot of things.
Even artichokes have doubts - Yale Daily NewsWe can not do without the act of categorizing. It helps us organize. Yet, to categorize, or to differentiate, does not require the separation of the categorized object’s other qualities.

Except, maybe? The time signature of a piece of music may not be pre-agreed on, but that doesn't necessarily prevent a band from triangulating some shared or complementary tempo.

Building a Creation Engine - by DavidXYu - XY-WiseTo verify whether such a source is potent invites a sense of trust-in-self. It can be literal, like a built-up list of “writings I want to do”, which is a proxy for how potent the source is. For me, it looks like trying to hold a passive intention of “interesting things to write about”, and as I go through life, trying to notice how common ideas would pop up as a result. Usually, the more trivial the trigger from life, the more I feel confident…

A Handy Guide To Being A Supervillainperhaps Ian Malcolm said it best :
A Handy Guide To Being A SupervillainShe has another curious trick (which may or may not be rare) of never killing anything. She brings em back alive and lets you take them away from her. She has brought into the house at various times such things as a dove, a blue parakeet, and a large butterfly. The butterfly and the parakeet were entirely unharmed and carried on just as though nothing had happened.
