our culture to one of commenting less and listening more, so we can build our students’ confidence and capabilities as we all spend a little less time grading.
What happens when we stop leaving comments and start getting real? – Lead by LearningBecause I doubted his abilities, I didn’t let him show me his skills. I sat at my desk and listened to the recording again, distraught and disappointed in myself.
What happens when we stop leaving comments and start getting real? – Lead by LearningMy visual field, on the other hand, is always a shifting line. How can I share this with my students when I myself don’t even know what to expect?
Barriers and Blessings - Knowles Teacher InitiativeMy hearing loss is stable. It is familiar and predictable, so I can adapt accordingly.
Barriers and Blessings - Knowles Teacher InitiativeI took the safe route of silence and secrecy.
Barriers and Blessings - Knowles Teacher InitiativeBy sharing it with 130 teenagers, I felt that I would lose myself in that transparency. But I also wanted to be real with them and I wrestled with this tension.
Barriers and Blessings - Knowles Teacher InitiativeI am the professional educator, highly trained in the field, not her. Yet, I was scared because there was a jabbing needle of possibility in her concern.
Barriers and Blessings - Knowles Teacher InitiativeI couldn’t stand wasting class time, much less putting on a public display of the ineffectiveness of my eyes.
Barriers and Blessings - Knowles Teacher InitiativeEven though I only spent a few hours with her, Ms. Witzeman became a model for me of what it means to be a hearing-impaired teacher.
Barriers and Blessings - Knowles Teacher Initiative(so that means you all need to be paying attention, because I will put you on the spot). What questions do you have?
Barriers and Blessings - Knowles Teacher InitiativeIn fact, as Carla Shalaby details, when children and young people are curious and want to stay with the thing that has piqued their curiosity, they are often labeled troublemakers because they are reluctant to do a different thing a teacher is telling them to do at that exact moment.
What I learned from debating the Science of Reading more than 20 years ago is still true | Leigh PatelTeachers assumed that I was good at math because of my South Asian surname. Quickly disappointed by their assumptions, they mostly left me alone because I didn’t cause much (visible) trouble. But was I a good learner? Probably not. Schooling tends to reward children and young people who know how to perform being a good student. It has weaker muscles for recognizing genuine learning.
What I learned from debating the Science of Reading more than 20 years ago is still true | Leigh PatelI paused. I had abandoned our agreements for a tepid reason: the clinic didn’t have books that both interested Brandon and could strengthen his decoding and meaning making skills. To this day, I am grateful he knew himself so well and trusted me just enough to yank me back to our shared agreements. We solved the problem of relevant text absence fairly easily, but it had the potential of breaking a tenuous trust that Brandon had in me.
What I learned from debating the Science of Reading more than 20 years ago is still true | Leigh PatelThe pursuit of freedom is intertwined with literacy and apparent in many social movements, in which internal political education and study are essential to struggle. In many ways, the most organic place for learning is in struggle.
What I learned from debating the Science of Reading more than 20 years ago is still true | Leigh PatelNot all literacy is print. And despite the fact that 3rd grade literacy levels have long been used to drive the calculated construction of prisons, there is myriad evidence of the ways that oral literacies and their accompanying histories have been systematically eroded over time through colonization, but not at all lost.
What I learned from debating the Science of Reading more than 20 years ago is still true | Leigh PatelWe agreed that neither of us were experts about each other’s worlds and we would try as hard as we could for Brandon to reach his goals and my goals for him.
What I learned from debating the Science of Reading more than 20 years ago is still true | Leigh PatelMeanwhile, I stand facing in the direction of my ancestors’ homeland, east, listening to the absence of stories.
The Stories I Haven't Been Told – Jamie FigueroaMemory will shape-shift with age and time and perspective. Its fins become wings, wings become hide; legs, tail, and horns emerge.
The Stories I Haven't Been Told – Jamie FigueroaMedicalization is “a process in which nonmedical problems become defined and treated as medical problems, usually in terms of illness and disorders [and are] described using medical language, understood through the adoption of a medical framework, or treated with a medical intervention.
Fibromyalgia Wars | The Journal of RheumatologyI can’t help but wonder if all this effort we’re putting into keeping work at arm’s length is actually holding us back from being our best selves.
What I Miss About Working at Stripe - Everyit focuses us on the interaction of the rooms we occupy, rather than calling us to account for the interactions we don’t experience.
"Being-in-the-Room Privilege: Elite Capture and Epistemic Deference" by Olúfémi O. Táíwò“elite capture”: the control over political agendas and resources by a group’s most advantaged people. If we want to use standpoint epistemology to challenge unjust power arrangements, it’s hard to imagine how we could do worse.
"Being-in-the-Room Privilege: Elite Capture and Epistemic Deference" by Olúfémi O. TáíwòIf we take for granted the ubiquity and natural-ness of racism, “white supremacy,” and “anti-blackness,” then it becomes very difficult to visualize their historical origins and, by extension, their future limits.
About those "letters to my Asian parents about anti-black racism"In this sense, anti-Asian and anti-black racism share in common the quality of emerging from contradictions in modern society, even if they are also animated by different racial stereotypes, owing to distinct structural positions within capitalism (the closest analogy for anti-Asian racism might be modern anti-Semitism).
About those "letters to my Asian parents about anti-black racism"that of millennial and younger diaspora telling their elders how to act like good white US liberals
About those "letters to my Asian parents about anti-black racism"The alliance would also queer the requirement of politics for sameness and provoke ontological disagreement among those who share sameness—inaugurating an altogether different practice of politics: one across divergence.
e-flux journal 56th Venice Biennale – SUPERCOMMUNITY – Marisol de la CadenaPublic housing at the time was designed by elites who didn’t have any skin in the game — they were never going to live there. Because of this, they destroyed the natural ecologies of low income housing and replaced them with housing projects that may have caused more harm than good.
The Hypocrisy of Elites - by Erik TorenbergAccording to Bateson, being part of any system leads to inherent and unavoidable communication between you and the other parts, implicit or explicit, which affects the other parts of the system and how they behave, which further affects how you behave, and so on.
Philosophy of TherapyOne thing that sets these intensely creative individuals apart, as far as I can tell, is that when sitting with their thoughts they are uncommonly willing to linger in confusion. To be curious about that which confuses
Cultivating a state of mind where new ideas are bornYours was a tenderness, of vulnerability, that asked everything, expected everything and, like the world's own Merlin, provided us with the ways and means to deliver.
Life in His LanguageYou went into that forbidden territory and decolonized it, ''robbed it of the jewel of its naivete,'' and un-gated it for black people so that in your wake we could enter it, occupy it, restructure it in order to accommodate our complicated passion - not our vanities but our intricate, difficult, demanding beauty, our tragic, insistent knowledge, our lived reality, our sleek classical imagination - all the while refusing ''to be defined by a language that has never been able to recognize [ us ] .'' In your hands language was handsome again. In your hands we saw how it was meant to be: neither …
Life in His LanguageAs she sleeps, it’s as if a person, her brain, and her body converse imperfectly; their delirious miscommunication is the dream.
What Are Dreams For? | The New Yorker“Dreaming is a safe space, a time to try things out and retune or debug your body,” Bongard told me.
What Are Dreams For? | The New YorkerIn a series of papers, Blumberg articulated his theory that the brain uses rem sleep to “learn” the body.
What Are Dreams For? | The New Yorkerbecause they lacked the capacity to go beyond the context they had been raised in.
Cultivating a state of mind where new ideas are bornThe “bad” trope also provides people with an easy reason to give up, and the education system concurs by writing them off as fundamentally unsuited. Finally, it gives educators and policymakers an excuse not to think about teaching in a more flexible and creative way, to design new approaches that stop people falling out of love with the subject.
What if nobody is bad at maths? | Mathematics | The Guardianwe don’t pay enough attention to feelings. Typical curriculums fail to imbue children with a love and appreciation of maths.
What if nobody is bad at maths? | Mathematics | The GuardianMathematics is not like art or music, which people regularly enjoy all over the country by visiting museums or attending concerts.
Declines in math readiness underscore the urgency of math awarenessA 2020 study on media portrayals of math found an overall “invisibility of mathematics” in popular culture. Other findings were that math is presented as being irrelevant to the real world and of little interest to most people, while mathematicians are stereotyped to be singular geniuses or socially inept nerds, and white and male.
Declines in math readiness underscore the urgency of math awarenesswhy and how we assume that students from some communities are capable of engaging a rigorous curriculum, but not others?

Quit Your JobYou don’t actually need the money; in reality, the money needs you to give it a worthy purpose, but everyone gets this backward.

Blunt-Force Ethnic Credibility | Som-Mai NguyenUnderfunctioning, perhaps, can become a window to otherfunctioning: turning our energy willfully towards lusher ends. Yes, we must make a new world in the shell of the old. But we’ll see it first in daydreams, in the velvet space between acts.

In Defence of Sloth - by Michelle Jia - Chasing the SundogThe whole social culture of disability activism and studies is leveraged to support the individual’s demand for attention and proper respect; it cannot countenance the notion that there are those who we should put before ourselves
