Harriet Lerner’s book “The Dance of Fear” gave me my first introduction to the idea of overfunctioning and underfunctioning. By Lerner’s description, overfunctioners are those who, in a relationship dynamic, overdo their involvement: they are usually high-strung, anxious, and pick up tasks compulsively for fear that those around them cannot handle the work.
