What I do object to quite strongly is the narrative that scientists are somehow helpless in the face of all these awful incentives—that we can’t possibly be expected to take any course of action that has any potential, however small, to impede our own career development.
No, it’s not The Incentives—it’s you – [citation needed]Together with them, we seek to identify new paths for the common good and for promoting a dignified life for all. Indeed, openness to dialogue is an integral part of the Church’s vocation because, constituted in Christ as “a sacrament… of communion with God and of the unity of the entire human race,” [3] she recognizes history as the place where the Gospel challenges and directs human experience.
Encyclical Letter of His Holiness Leo XIV Magnifica Humanitas (15 May 2026)I do not think religion is merely a tool. If I did, I would not be searching—I would pick it up and use it. I think it might be true, and that whether it is true is worth finding out. I pray.
Searching for God in Silicon Valley - by Avital BalwitIf Chesterton could see us now, I think he would feel vindicated, but the larger part would be sorrow.
Searching for God in Silicon Valley - by Avital BalwitI want what happens when we are silent, or praying, or singing. I want communion with that greater, stranger thing—a transcendent sense of meaning, a call to be better than I am.
Searching for God in Silicon Valley - by Avital Balwitindistinguishable to everyone outside
Searching for God in Silicon Valley - by Avital BalwitYou cannot stand this close to questions of omniscience and immortality without being pulled toward the territory religion has always occupied.
Searching for God in Silicon Valley - by Avital BalwitIf our world is disenchanted, why do we then feel that shimmer of something more? If there is no God, then why are there still echoes of Him?
Searching for God in Silicon Valley - by Avital BalwitThey do not have an answer for what makes for a life well lived, what the Good is, what happens after death, what happened before the world as we know it began—though many have deep curiosity.
Searching for God in Silicon Valley - by Avital BalwitBut enough are visibly searching that it is worth asking what they are searching for.
Searching for God in Silicon Valley - by Avital BalwitWhatever versions of ourselves we must allow to die to move towards God’s vision of our lives must be faced eventually, which means they must be faced immediately.
Naithan Jones on X: "A Beautiful Death" / XBut rather than risk saying the wrong thing, many people said nothing. They disappeared
On Losing a Daughter - The AtlanticI was still crawling, but crawling upward.
On Losing a Daughter - The AtlanticNo matter how hard the day was, we made a point of sitting down together at the end of it.
On Losing a Daughter - The Atlantic“Do you have an appointment?”
On Losing a Daughter - The AtlanticI realized now that “too cold to snow” perfectly described our emotional state. Too shocked to cry: that would be our personal weather report for days to come.
On Losing a Daughter - The AtlanticOver and over, what we see is that writing is more like gunpowder than like a nuclear bomb. In each of the four sites of the independent invention of writing, there’s either no evidence one way or the other, or there’s evidence that a proto-writing pre-dated the administrative needs of the state. Even in Mesopotamia, a phonetic cuneiform script was used for a few hundred years for accounting before writing was used for overtly political purposes.
The roots of writing lie in hopes and dreams, not in accounting | Aeon EssaysAnd tokens didn’t need the conditions of the state to develop – they preceded the state by 2,000 years. What we have is counting that precedes complex economic organisation as well as phonetic writing that precedes political functions. Both trajectories undermine the writing/state argument.
The roots of writing lie in hopes and dreams, not in accounting | Aeon EssaysI like to think of writing as a layered invention
The roots of writing lie in hopes and dreams, not in accounting | Aeon Essays‘The coincidence of the pristine state and pristine writing,’ he writes, ‘tempts one to the crude functionalist conclusion that would-be state makers invented the forms of notation that were essential to statecraft.
The roots of writing lie in hopes and dreams, not in accounting | Aeon EssaysHe is thinking inside the box. This is a man taking his creative work seriously. Everything about this space conveys the message: this project matters. It is a space for him to think with, to help him organize his thinking, and to connect him emotionally to his project. It is adaptable, and able to evolve in response to what he is doing; but at the same time also organized, likely reflecting and supporting the organization of the book. I've often talked this image over with other creative researchers, many of whom find it inspiring.
Developing creative identityWriting-to-explore is more difficult, since you're not always sure you will discover things worth the telling.
Developing creative identityRather, Brand is a person who cares a tremendous amount about answering a particular question, and to that end deploys every tool he can find that might help. Practices like photo journalism, travel writing and so on are simply part of a journey to find deeper answers. So Brand is not working as a writer in any recognized genre. Rather he is developing a unique written form, in response to the problems he was facing.
Developing creative identityBecause his question isn't founded in any existing field, he doesn't have a body of standard existing practice to draw on
Developing creative identityRather, it is a larger case for using one’s limited leisure time ambitiously, for setting a lofty goal and trying to reach it, rather than being satisfied with passive day-to-day existence. Naomi’s choice to do this with the Great Books has given her many gifts: a rare set of skills as a writer, a lively and intelligent online community, and, though she didn’t know it while she was writing What’s So Great…, a book deal with a major publisher.
The Time Will Pass Anyway - by Henry BeglerSurround yourself with friends who still engage with you as if nothing had changed: they’re grounding even if they don’t understand what you’re going through. You’re not going crazy. You’re not going to fall through the floor. You are still you, just not the same one you’re used to.
The grief of losing your sense of self is like getting to Heaven and being upset they don't have your favorite flavor of La Croixbut I no longer have access to something specific that is dear and familiar like my old habits of mind.
The grief of losing your sense of self is like getting to Heaven and being upset they don't have your favorite flavor of La CroixShe was more like a tired, languishing dog that needed to be put down, an old friend who was suffering immensely but would stay with me until the bitter end, but if you looked at her with compassion you’d discover a moral dilemma in letting her live.
The grief of losing your sense of self is like getting to Heaven and being upset they don't have your favorite flavor of La CroixI still have discernment and awareness of all the things that used to stress me out, but without the stress part
The grief of losing your sense of self is like getting to Heaven and being upset they don't have your favorite flavor of La CroixWhat was surprising was that I missed the bad parts just as much, that they did not diminish how lovable I was, in fact they were part of the package that was me.
The grief of losing your sense of self is like getting to Heaven and being upset they don't have your favorite flavor of La CroixI saw for the first time how I would be remembered if I had actually passed away on that last morning of the retreat, and how I had been loved all this time.
The grief of losing your sense of self is like getting to Heaven and being upset they don't have your favorite flavor of La CroixI was going to keep on running, and I was going to keep doing it well.
Why I Run - The AtlanticIn medicine, it doesn't matter if it works as much as if you prove it works. No one was focused, like a goddamn laser, not only on having an innovation that worked, but on proving that it worked. And he did this, not for glory, but for justice.
A Eulogy for Nolan Ryan Williams, M.D.Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Treatment was a big swing. That abbreviated to SAINT—never say Nolan wasn't a brilliant branding guy, also, although I don't know who actually came up with it.
A Eulogy for Nolan Ryan Williams, M.D.The speed of offered hope matters. The dose of hope matters. The chance that you're going to get well? It matters profoundly. Those numbers? The response and remission rates? They matter. What would we need to change in our thinking to improve our patients' outcomes?
A Eulogy for Nolan Ryan Williams, M.D.Nolan saw that something different was possible—thanks to his dual training in neurology and psychiatry, he was privy to the work in Parkinson's disease, the implant and electrodes firing tens of thousands of pulses every day, and he could do simple math comparing the 2000 pulses we did with TMS to the 50,000 we were doing with Parkinson's disease and know those numbers were different.
A Eulogy for Nolan Ryan Williams, M.D.In psychiatry, Dr. Mark George changed our world, and the world of so many patients, including me, by realizing that a humble transcranial magnetic stimulation coil was capable of more than just “evaluating the motor cortex.” It could be a treatment.
A Eulogy for Nolan Ryan Williams, M.D.In the misalignment branch, AIs stop using English chain of thought and think in “neuralese” - a pre-symbolic language of neural weight activations (do humans do this? is this the same as the mentalese hypothesis?).
My Takeaways From AI 2027 - by Scott AlexanderAll these little boosts will compound on themselves in typical intelligence-explosion fashion, and when you game it out, you get a one-year-or-so takeoff to superintelligence.
My Takeaways From AI 2027 - by Scott AlexanderIndustrial policy plays an important role, as well as differences in the education systems and talent pools of the two countries. But without a doubt, America’s loss of Chang and its retention of Huang were critical to the evolution of the U.S. semiconductor industry
Skilled immigration is a national security priorityChang was a genius in the field of semiconductor engineering. He realized that if a chip company focused on fabrication and left the design of chips to other companies, it could become highly specialized and outcompete companies like Intel that did both in-house. That bet paid off spectacularly.
Skilled immigration is a national security priorityChina has a much bigger talent pool than America because it’s simply a much bigger country. If the U.S. wants to match China’s gigantic pool of human resources, it must supplement domestic talent by recruiting from abroad. Mathematically there’s simply no other option.
Skilled immigration is a national security priorityEnterprise sales, then, involves understanding and influencing the components (people) of the system in order to produce the desired behavior (buying your product.) Every system (company) is different, and so you need to develop a systematic approach to hacking (selling to) them.
Enterprise sales for hackers : YC Startup Library | Y CombinatorThis won’t show you the reasoning tokens, sadly. Those are served up by the API (example here) but LLM doesn’t yet have a way to display them.
