I was "micromanaged" for a while in my career. I felt disrespected and not trusted and frustrated at first, then I decided to find a way to resolve that. Everyday, I'd "over-communicate" and share every detail about what I was working on, my reasoning, etc. After a while, the person said to me, "You know, you don't have to tell me everything, I trust you."
15 principles for managing up - Wes Kao's NewsletterPut your recommendation, action item, or question at the top, then context below.
15 principles for managing up - Wes Kao's Newsletter✅ “This is a problem. Here’s why it matters. I suggest doing X.” ✅ “An important customer said X. I don’t think it’s a big deal, but I wanted to bring it up and run it by you.” ✅ “I’m not sure how to solve X but wanted to surface it. My hunch is to monitor for now, but let me know if we should brainstorm what to do.”
15 principles for managing up - Wes Kao's Newsletter✅ "I recommend X. Here's the rationale, data, and examples of why this should work. The potential risks are Y, but we can address by doing Z. If you agree, I can start by doing [first step]."
15 principles for managing up - Wes Kao's Newsletter✅ “Here’s the minimum viable backstory, so we can spend time on the juicy stuff.”
15 principles for managing up - Wes Kao's Newsletterextract internal activations from a model, then train a simple classifier on them. If a linear probe can accurately classify some property from the activations, that property is linearly represented in the model's internal state.
Chapter 1: Transformer Interpretability - ARENAAtmosphere describes the feelings we get that are evoked by colour, texture and typography. You might already think of atmosphere in different terms. You might call it “feel”, “mood” or even “visual identity.”
Designing Systems | Atomic Design by Brad Frostobject-oriented programming and establishing important modular concepts like separation of concerns and the single responsibility principle
Designing Systems | Atomic Design by Brad FrostModularity predates the web by a long shot. The Industrial Revolution brought about interchangeable parts and Henry Ford’s assembly line forever transformed the automobile manufacturing process. The earliest cars and components were individually crafted, which led to many safety and maintainability nightmares. Ford broke the automobile down into its component parts and modularized the assembly process. The results spoke for themselves: more uniform, more reliable, safer cars rolled out of the factory, and in record time to boot.
Designing Systems | Atomic Design by Brad FrostThinking of the web as pages has real ramifications on how people interact with web experiences, and influences how we go about creating web interfaces.
Designing Systems | Atomic Design by Brad Frostthe actual constraint is reducing the number of lines of code it takes to deliver that experience to billions of people under any load, at any latency, while maintaining uptime. the reward function is compression, not production.
claude code is not making your product betterthe best engineering cultures treat lines of code as something you spend, not something you produce. you spend them on the features that matter. you refuse to spend them on the features that don’t. the codebase is a liability on your balance sheet, not an asset.
claude code is not making your product betterromantic relationships/best friends/therapists are critical for the same reason, where this person can become the primary person who explains you to *you*, the supplement to your internal monologue, and can rewire your understanding of yourself for way better or for way worse
the friendship theory of everythingI went to house parties regularly, and I did not purchase a bedframe until 2023
the friendship theory of everythingEmphasize the "Reorder" action, because returning users want to repeat past orders as quickly as possible with minimal cognitive load.
A Practical Prompting Guide for Figma Make | by Nick Babich | Dec, 2025 | UX PlanetAnchor prompts in user intent, not visuals alone Another common mistake when prompting Figma Make is focusing only on what the UI should look like, instead of why it exists in the first place. AI performs significantly better when it understands user intent and context, not just layout instructions. Visual direction without intent often results in generic, over-designed, or misprioritized screens.

Don't wait until it hits 0% as it will degrade your outputs, and if it compacts in the middle of a task it will forget potentially relevant context that you've given it even in the last chat.

How to Read One Book Per Week (Even if You Read Slowly) | by Scott H. Young | Dec, 2025 | MediumTeachers. We’ve recently partnered with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to reshape teacher training in an age of increasingly capable AI. This program aims to support 400,000 teachers in AI education and introduce their perspective in the development of AI systems. In addition, we previewed some findings from Anthropic Interviewer regarding how AI is transforming software engineering at Anthropic. Sharing qualitative stories about our own workplace transformation led us to find much common ground between software engineers and teachers, bringing everyone together at the same table to…
Introducing Anthropic Interviewer \ AnthropicScientists didn’t, in general, fear job displacement due to AI. Some pointed to tacit knowledge that resists digitization, with one microbiologist explaining: “I worked with one bacterial strain where you had to initiate various steps when the cells reached specific colors. The differences in color have to be seen to be understood and [instructions are] seldom written down anywhere.” Others emphasized the inherently human nature of research decision-making, with one bioengineer stating: “Experimentation and research is also… inherently up to me”, and noted that “certain parts of the research p…
Introducing Anthropic Interviewer \ AnthropicAnthropic Interviewer then conducted real-time, adaptive interviews following its interview plan. At this stage, we included a system prompt to instruct Anthropic Interviewer how to use best practices for interviews.
Introducing Anthropic Interviewer \ AnthropicWe developed a system prompt—a set of overall instructions for how the AI model is to work—to give Anthropic Interviewer its methodology. This was where we included hypotheses regarding each sample, as well as best practices for creating an interview plan (this was established in collaboration with our user research team).
Introducing Anthropic Interviewer \ AnthropicYC is one of these machines for later stage folks.
Build education machines. And to me, we should be building more of these “machines” that build new human capital. Machines where a person who is a 2/10 in their ability to impact the world + pursue their goals in some domain walks in, and can walk out at least a 6/10.
Build education machines.A CEO who wants employees to brainstorm creatively will have much better luck if they lower their status rather than raise it. No one writes poetry in front of a firing squad.
Palantir’s Weirdest Book Recommendation - by Mario GabrieleThroughout Impro, some themes recur: the inherent “competition” in social interactions, the stultifying qualities of traditional education, how ego impedes originality, and the malleability of imagination
Palantir’s Weirdest Book Recommendation - by Mario GabrieleTo create great work, Johnstone believes one should avoid learning “how things are done.”
Palantir’s Weirdest Book Recommendation - by Mario GabrieleIt’s a good place to work, to meditate, to experience solitude. I’ve grown more intellectually rigorous, because everyone here is so fucking literal-minded
The Bay Area is cursed - by Sasha ChapinSan Francisco is an avoidant city, and Berkeley is an anxious colony
The Bay Area is cursed - by Sasha ChapinPeople are dreaming up the future here, who have never fully experienced their own bodies or emotions. They talk philosophically about how to reshape society, but don’t know what society feels like
The Bay Area is cursed - by Sasha ChapinIs there a less sexual city than this?
The Bay Area is cursed - by Sasha ChapinIt is the curse of Aboutness. Social life here is not regarded as something people do naturally, an organic element of being. It has to be About something. In New York, it’s an important component of the human repertoire to dress up nicely, gather, drink and eat, be part of the throng. In the Bay, most gatherings have the sweaty air of Purpose. Discussions are held to uncover new information, not because it is good to be around each other.
The Bay Area is cursed - by Sasha ChapinI put on my critic’s hat when it came to my own work but rarely took the time to think deeply about other websites and apps.

On Taste, Part 3. Or, how to improve your taste if it… | by Julie Zhuo | The Year of the Looking Glass | Mediumfor any given field, do you understand why the people you admire have the opinions they do on what’s good and what isn’t?
On Taste, Part 2 | by Julie Zhuo | The Year of the Looking Glass | MediumAll of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.

Notes On LoveIt's not so good on the spaced repetition But it is good for creating a rich context, a deep meaning and sense of social context, and a deep encoding. Write four five-tweet threads about something, over four days, and you will find multiple new ways of thinking about it.
