Many months ago at a house party in New York City, a friend I respect and admire asked me what I had gotten out of grad school. I stumbled through a series of clichés and then, hearing my own utter incoherence out loud, promised to write something that assembled my thoughts more clearly on the matter. She nodded and told me she looked forward to reading it.
