This is a general pattern. Safety requires: both prevention and “cure” both technical and social solutions among technical solutions, both products and systems among social solutions, both education and law
No silver bullet - by Jason CrawfordWe have always had opinions about technology, but this is the first technology which has opinions about us.
How I'm thinking about the next 3 years - by Niki Dupuisthe guts to embark on projects without always receiving head pats
How I'm thinking about the next 3 years - by Niki DupuisWhen Americans are starving during the Great Depression… …okay, Hoover totally dropped the ball on that one.
Book Review: Hoover | Slate Star CodexTwenty million people are starving. Whatever their politics, they shall be fed
Book Review: Hoover | Slate Star Codexown pet project is saving the Soviet Union
Book Review: Hoover | Slate Star Codexhe is one of the first government officials to realize that financial panics have a psychological aspect, so he immediately puts out lots of press releases saying that economists agree everything is fine and the panic is definitely over
Book Review: Hoover | Slate Star CodexNever was a nobler work of disinterested goodwill carried through with more tenacy and sincerity and skill, and with less thanks either asked or given.
Book Review: Hoover | Slate Star CodexThey noticed how Hoover obsessed over the logistics of food distribution while avoiding interaction with recipients of relief and thought him a bloodless man. “He told of the work in Belgium as coldly as if he were giving statistics of production,” said US official. “From his words and his manner he seemed to regard human beings as so many numbers. Not once did he show the slightest feeling.”
Book Review: Hoover | Slate Star Codexgenerations of readers can read them, tear out the ones that resonate, and tape them to their refrigerators
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsParticularity and culture cannot scale
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis Robbinsa poem that belongs to a specific life and a specific historical network and then radiates out from there.
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsThe rubric likely does not register the importance of particularity and culture and local (or niche) knowledge
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsA great deal of Yeats’s culture is in the poem
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsI would guess that a rubric might say: if the poetic structure is appropriate to the subject, reward. If the poem uses clichéd imagery, penalize. If the metaphors are mixed, penalize. If the ending reframes the opening, reward. I note that these are not subjective criteria, really.
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsMercor’s bet is that the same process that trains a model to write better poetry can train it to do better legal drafts, better medical diagnoses, better financial analyses
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsPerhaps he is interested in scale? But what is poetry at scale?
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsIt turns out the best indicator of future poetic greatness is early work
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsBut LLMs do not yet, at this writing, have culture. Without culture, I’m not sure there can be great poetry
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis RobbinsA great poem is “about” a specific person or moment embedded in a particular culture, composed in such a way that it reaches across time and distance to resonate with readers outside that culture.
LLM poetry and the "greatness" question - by Hollis Robbinswhat would batteries to solve loneliness look like? i know that you love me, but i don’t see you very often and sometimes i forget things when i am alone.
batteries - by vincent huang - a slice of my mindswitching costs and loss of context across members would eventually catch up to them.
Inventing the near future - Brian MachadoI learned CAD, MechE, EE, and how to code so I could make stuff that I wanted.
Inventing the near future - Brian Machado"A company being too early doesn't exist. Just work on your thing longer until the world is ready for it."
Inventing the near future - Brian MachadoHe just needs to surround himself with enough of them that one day, after absorbing everything, he'll start having great ideas of his own.
Inventing the near future - Brian MachadoYou have to have a team that knows how to build the Apple II and carries that knowledge down to making an M4 MacBook."
Inventing the near future - Brian Machadoit doesn’t matter how good your taste in mentors is because even the most incredible person does not have enough information to know what your future should look like. your life is beyond the reach of prophetic instruction
entering my ROCK ERA - by vincent huangSomeone justifying their choice to major in aerospace engineering to friends and family now has to justify a little less.
How Elon Musk is making engineers cool again | Samo BurjaIt takes a little charisma to shape the right message for the right audience; it takes a little spin to secure funding for ambitious infrastructure projects.
where are tech's charismatic leaders? - circeWhat makes charm so instrumental to mobilization is that it instills in others a sense of their own capabilities: it attempts to bring out more from the humanity that surrounds the charmer, rather than solely elevating the charmer themselves.
where are tech's charismatic leaders? - circeWhen enough people live this way, the institutions necessary to sustain and transmit aesthetic knowledge will arise as a natural consequence.
The Obligation to BeautyYou’re becoming a node in networks that don’t exist yet, preparing the ground for institutions that can’t be planned but must be grown.
The Obligation to BeautyIgnore them. Spend years, if necessary, looking at architecture, painting, and design. Train your perception until you can recognize quality directly, not through credentials or consensus. Build libraries not of books you’ve read but books worth living with.
The Obligation to BeautyThey see things others miss not because they studied harder but because they live differently.
The Obligation to BeautyIf you can afford to live otherwise, why wouldn’t you?
The Obligation to BeautyWhen you encounter someone living aesthetically, you don’t just see beautiful objects. You see a life that makes you want to live better. This is the aspirational quality of taste
The Obligation to BeautyThe Sistine Chapel is inseparable from the form of life that produced it
The Obligation to Beautythe loss of this knowledge is common, but a permanent loss is rare. All that is needed is the right ruler or thinker for society to learn it anew.
How Late Zhou China Reverse-Engineered a CivilizationThe special knowledge required to govern a large and complex civilization cannot be reinvented every generation
How Late Zhou China Reverse-Engineered a CivilizationIt isn’t at all clear that you can reboot the social technology of an essentially intact empire in order to reforge it after it’s broken.
How Late Zhou China Reverse-Engineered a Civilizationall these circumstances are just how the past happened to unravel and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with me it just means i have more work to do to get to where i want to be and the only thing left to do is to move forward with all my heart
YOU CAN GET WHAT YOU WANT OR YOU CAN JUST GET OLDi know there’s no point in getting hung up on the past or in blaming myself for landing where i am or for feeling bad about not yet knowing what i want to do next - it’s not my fault that the things i happened to be obsessed with in childhood ended up not being the things i want to do now, it’s not my fault that i was raised with a scarcity mindset that caused me to waste a bunch of time over the last ~5 years, it’s not my fault that i didn’t understand feelings or people well enough to see obvious things earlier
YOU CAN GET WHAT YOU WANT OR YOU CAN JUST GET OLDactually i have enough time to think about both technical topics and nontechnical ones like health and clothes
YOU CAN GET WHAT YOU WANT OR YOU CAN JUST GET OLDi’m sure i’ll end up somewhere good, not because i’m a top engineer / ai researcher / etc, but because i know i’m capable of finding good things
YOU CAN GET WHAT YOU WANT OR YOU CAN JUST GET OLDbelieving in abundance over scarcity
YOU CAN GET WHAT YOU WANT OR YOU CAN JUST GET OLDfind a new source of self-confidence, one rooted not in superiority but instead in optimism and joy and courage. you need to genuinely believe that things will turn out well
YOU CAN GET WHAT YOU WANT OR YOU CAN JUST GET OLDinter-lab gossip. They were flying back for a big rationalist solstice party in Berkeley tomorrow, but not before seeing the pandas at the San Diego Zoo.
