The Anti-Amazon - Benjamin Y. FongRecently, I passed 20,000 followers on Bluesky, which I didn’t really say anything about. Sure, I thought about it, but then I had decided to myself, what’s the point? Soon, there will be another mark I can point to and feel weird about. The thing about social media these days is that the good stuff all too often pulls you in, but at the end of the day, you end up feeling hollow.

The time the x86 emulator team found code so bad that they fixed it during emulation - The Old New ThingBy utilizing a femtosecond laser surface processing technique, we create a multi-functional superwicking black metal (SWBM) panel that can pull a thin water film uphill across its surface, absorb nearly all solar radiation, and most importantly, automatically move the crystalized salts from the active regions to the passive regions for self-cleaning and salt collection.

SHAWN HUCKINSBut seriously folks, the combined compute demand of every single AI company in the world doesn’t currently reach $100 billion — and it needs to be ten times that by 2030 or all those data centers got built for no reason! And for that to happen, both Anthropic and OpenAI need to be making about $400 billion a year in annual revenue, which means there needs to actually be that much demand for AI services!
AI Is Slowing DownWhile journalists are currently gooning over OpenAI and Anthropic making $6 billion or $10 billion in a given quarter, that’s just not enough!
AI Is Slowing DownOpenAI has projected to burn at least $852 billion through the end of 2030, and has made over $770 billion in compute commitments across Microsoft, Amazon, CoreWeave, Cerebras, and Oracle. The $122 billion funding round from March will be insufficient to cover these costs, and it will require, at the very least, another $250 billion in funding by the end of the year.
AI Is Slowing DownTo pay for this compute, Anthropic must meet its projected revenue of $174 billion a year by 2029. Anthropic has raised $95 billion across rounds in February, April (from Google and Amazon), and May. These funds will be insufficient to cover Anthropic’s costs, as will Anthropic’s cash flow, meaning that it will have to raise at least another $200 billion in the next year.
AI Is Slowing DownThe fact that hyperscalers are doing equity sales is, as economist Paul Kedrosky raised in our conversation on my show last week, a sign that debt is becoming harder to acquire.
AI Is Slowing DownIf we take Sightline Climate’s data from February at face value, there are 190GW of data centers planned. If we take NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s statement that data centers will cost $80 billion to $100 billion a gigawatt at face value, this means that said data centers will cost anywhere from $9.5 trillion to $15 trillion. Bloomberg incorrectly states that this is a “$3 trillion” buildout.
AI Is Slowing DownThe big idea is to "zero out" the low digits
Labor of Division (Episode IV): Algorithm DBut Kerouac was nothing if not authentic.
Jack Kerouac: The Pseudo-Saint of Mindfulness - LibertiesKerouac interacted with religious beliefs in bad faith, extracting the most ascetic, life-denying passages to legitimize his shame and guilt. There is no doubt that this relationship with religion was as transactional as the most self-justifying wellness practice. Whether affirming or denying, both of these approaches are resolutely tied to the self.
Jack Kerouac: The Pseudo-Saint of Mindfulness - LibertiesThe devolution was absolute: Kerouac aged into a reactionary, alcoholic patriot, gibbering ineffectually while his former Beat confidant Ginsberg led the youth movement forward into the hippie age.
Jack Kerouac: The Pseudo-Saint of Mindfulness - LibertiesNO chasing after women any more — no hankering to lust & create sorrow & multiply desires & rage.
Jack Kerouac: The Pseudo-Saint of Mindfulness - LibertiesKerouac was set on becoming a bodhisattva, a being that reaches enlightenment through divine compassion for others. But compassion is often lacking from The Buddhist Years. While he appreciates that all beings are interconnected on an intellectual level, he does not seem to deduce ethical imperatives from this condition. His Buddhism demands nothing from the individual: “I could do anything I wanted.” Beat peer and Buddhist scholar Philip Whalen noted:
Jack Kerouac: The Pseudo-Saint of Mindfulness - LibertiesBut between these visceral bursts, the prose meanders, vague and unfocused, unable to convince itself of anything meaningful that occurred that fateful night.
Jack Kerouac: The Pseudo-Saint of Mindfulness - Libertieshedonism seems almost noble, suffused with meaning and integrity against vapid middle-class conformity.
Jack Kerouac: The Pseudo-Saint of Mindfulness - LibertiesTo his disciples, his spontaneous prose radiates wild, kinetic energy, a dizzying musical propulsion of words building on words building on words, the capstone of generative writing, frantic, compulsive hot wanderlust dripping from the walls as the sun rises up over the San Francisco Bay and gleams madly, gladly, while the — and so forth.
Jack Kerouac: The Pseudo-Saint of Mindfulness - Libertieseagle-eyed aficionados of American Westerns might have spotted that a number of the interior sunsets are actually scenes from well-known movies from this genre, including From Dusk till Dawn (1996), The Searchers (1956), and Django Unchained (2013)
Mackie | Where we Belongthe caravans in each of the other paintings in the series also have half of their sides cut away to reveal otherworldly scenes within them. Each unexpected scene is a sunset over a landscape, the sun glowing in the sky from bright white to hazy yellow, golden orange to umber-tinged red, evocative of great Romantic landscape paintings by the likes of Turner, Claude, Lieste or, more pertinently, Hudson River School painters such as Bierstadt, Cole or Church. The scenes are depicted as if flat on the interior back wall of the caravan, but the most curious thing – and the painterly device that rea…
Mackie | Where we BelongThe caravan is a motif that spans, and indeed defines, the whole body of work, appearing in a variety of beautiful, sometimes dramatic, sometimes haunting Highland environments, and always surrounded by a thick grey mist. These aren’t the caravans of your average holidaymaker, however, as they all seem to have seen better days.
Mackie | Where we Belonga small, male, six month old Day Octopus (so called because they hunt by day, or at least, dawn and dusk). He will stay here until he is sexually mature, then be released back into the ocean to mate, once, before he dies. For now, still too young, he must cope with this tank.
Nature as Witness | Folly Magazinewe can construct a surjective homomorphism θ from the free exponential ring on no generators to the ring of integers mod 2^32 by setting θ(exp(x)) = C^θ(x).
Schanuel’s conjecture and the semantics of FPSan | Complex Projective 4-SpaceAssuming the real version of Schanuel’s conjecture, we have that the subring X of R generated by {0, −, +, ×, exp} is isomorphic to the free exponential ring on no generators, as proved in Macintyre 1991.
Schanuel’s conjecture and the semantics of FPSan | Complex Projective 4-SpaceConstructing the multipliers in the embedding function and its inverse requires being able to compute efficient inverses modulo 2^k; we do this using ceil(log2(k)) iterations of the 2-adic Newton’s method.
Schanuel’s conjecture and the semantics of FPSan | Complex Projective 4-SpaceUpcasting is the reverse, where we choose the “sign-extending” lift from the integers mod 2^k to the integers mod 2^j; this in particular means that the constants {-1, 0, 1} survive arbitrary casting between different precisions.
Schanuel’s conjecture and the semantics of FPSan | Complex Projective 4-Spacean attendant pokes his head. time’s up, he says. I nod & my sister snuffs out her cigarette & disappears into the ward from its high-walled courtyard.

Hiding in Plain Sight: Evidence of Echeneidae Cloacal and Gill Diving Behavior in Manta Ray Hosts - Yeager - 2026 - Ecology and Evolution - Wiley Online LibraryContinuous audio and video accumulate context quickly. The streaming-session design handles short and medium interactions well, but very long sessions still require careful context management—an active area of work.
Interaction Models: A Scalable Approach to Human-AI Collaboration - Thinking Machines LabThe primary challenge with attention is Split-KV, which can typically lead to inconsistent accumulation orders between decode and prefill. However, we can maintain consistent accumulation order by choosing to split consistently between decode and prefill.
Interaction Models: A Scalable Approach to Human-AI Collaboration - Thinking Machines LabThe client sends each 200ms chunk as a separate request, while the inference server appends these chunks into a persistent sequence in GPU memory. This avoids frequent memory reallocations and metadata computations, and we’ve upstreamed a version of this feature to SGLang. In addition, we also optimized our kernels for latency as well as the shapes we see for bidirectional serving.
Interaction Models: A Scalable Approach to Human-AI Collaboration - Thinking Machines LabWe instead take in audio signals as dMel (Bai, et al. 2024) and transform it via a light-weighted embedding layer. Images are split into 40x40 patches which are encoded by an hMLP (Touvron et al. 2022). For the audio decoder we use a flow head (Lipman at al. 2022). All components are co-trained from scratch together with the transformer.
Interaction Models: A Scalable Approach to Human-AI Collaboration - Thinking Machines LabThe interaction model works with micro-turns continuously interleaving the processing of 200ms worth of input and generation of 200ms worth of output. Rather than consuming a complete user-turn and generating a complete response, both input and output tokens are treated as streams. Working with 200ms chunks of these streams enables near real-time concurrency of multiple input and output modalities.
Interaction Models: A Scalable Approach to Human-AI Collaboration - Thinking Machines LabIf I want to believe the world is flat, TikTok will gladly serve me that content all day. Meta will recommend supportive groups. There will be hashtags. There will be Discords. There will be a guy named Trent who runs a podcast. I will never have to face the deeply uncomfortable possibility that I might be wrong about anything, ever, until the day I die, surrounded by people who agree with me about everything, including which of the other mourners are secretly lizards.
