On the lessons that scholarly life taught me

In my early- to mid-twenties I was living and striving in New York City. I was a Yale graduate, a writer, a communications consultant, an activist. I volunteered in prisons and community orgs, and kept up with all the prestige press—the Times, the New Yorker, the Economist, the Atlantic. I wanted to be smart and successful so I could help solve the world’s biggest problems. At some point that kind of striving no longer felt like enough.
