GDP and prosperity across technology paths

This essay is a compendium of an old hobby-horse of mine.

It would be great to have a single number that captured something like how big our economy is, or how far our useful technology has advanced. In a word, it would be good to be able to put a number to our prosperity. A number like this would be especially useful these days, as we sit at the cusp of what seems like it will probably be the biggest technological and economic transformation of all time.
