I’ve recently noticed how much my friends and I reference the words of others when understanding ourselves. A single comment from a friend or even acquaintance about our people-pleasing tendencies, a proclivity for self-deprecation or more and less favorable career prospects can be taken as some truer truth than our self-knowledge.
