Inflexible people are quite hard to engage with while doing outreach. They have very specific requirements for a job, and instead of spending 3 to 6 months learning something new and flexing to where they could bring the most value in the movement, they would spend a year or more chasing the perfect role.
How to get a job in Effective Altruism - by Ula ZarosaThere simply isn’t any non-partisan position if we talk about transitions. We need to know who is responsible so that we know what will be a fair distribution of climate duties, we need to have a proper analysis of political economy and a theory of social change, and we need to not only focus on changes that can be framed as opportunities, but also on changes that require malign parties to stop doing great harm. If we want readers to know the truth, let’s give them not a misleading slice of it, but instead all of it.
The limits of number-crunching: Hannah Ritchie’s Not the End of the World — Crooked TimberOpvoeders kunnen hier op sturen.
- Achtergrond - Universiteit Utrechtno matter what area or intervention they currently think is the best, to reflect explicitly about these uncertainties and how they should update their behavior in light of them.
We should be more uncertain about cause prioritization based on philosophical arguments — EA Forummeta-normative questions of how effective altruists should act in the face of uncertainty about these questions (i.e. Have we captured all the relevant uncertainties? Are there particular actions that are very robust to these considerations? What are they?).
We should be more uncertain about cause prioritization based on philosophical arguments — EA Forumwe should be humble in our assertions about cross-cause prioritization generally and not confident that any particular intervention is all things considered best since any particular intervention or cause conclusion is premised on a lot of shaky evidence
We should be more uncertain about cause prioritization based on philosophical arguments — EA ForumEA cause prioritization decisions often rest on (implicit or explicit) philosophical considerations that are much tougher to justify reaching with high confidence.

We should be more uncertain about cause prioritization based on philosophical arguments — EA ForumThe expected value of an action is the sum of the value of each potential outcome multiplied by the probability of that outcome occurring
Junge Wähler: Gruselig happy | ZEIT ONLINEInstead of a dopamine fast, what we really need is a dopamine feast — one that makes us want experiences we actually like, rather than compulsively responding to cravings.
Opinion | A ‘Dopamine Fast’ Will Not Save You From Addiction - The New York TimesAddiction isn’t about seeking extra pleasure; it’s about killing excess emotional pain.
Opinion | A ‘Dopamine Fast’ Will Not Save You From Addiction - The New York TimesAs we contend with technology and other potentially addictive experiences, we should focus on what causes compulsions, not worry about what gives people pleasure.
Opinion | A ‘Dopamine Fast’ Will Not Save You From Addiction - The New York TimesAmericans aren’t facing an addiction crisis because we get too much dopamine from overabundant cheap thrills. Our problem, instead, is a lack of connection, community and purpose.
Opinion | A ‘Dopamine Fast’ Will Not Save You From Addiction - The New York Timesa while really noticing that tradeoff. Notice whether you really do value the milkshake more than a child's vaccination. And then, after a time, make yourself a budget that reflects those values. Set aside money for unnecessary things that make you happy. Do what you think will nurture you to age 100 as a generous and strategic giver. Because that, in the end, is what will help the most people.
Giving Gladly: Tradeoffsfrom a place of self-actualization and excitement.
Excited altruism - The GiveWell Blog“What issue should I work on in order to have as much positive impact as possible?”
Excited altruism - The GiveWell BlogI’d have trouble sustaining interest in a cause if I felt that I could do more good by switching to another.
Excited altruism - The GiveWell Blogshe sees altruism as a source of joy, not something for which joy is traded.

Deference Culture in EA — EA ForumThere have been five flu pandemics in this time frame, which implies an annualized probability of 5/122 ≈ 4% of a flu pandemic beginning in a given year.
