What are other situations where you can – in a compressed way – practice these skills that you need in the business world?
Identifying Skill Issues - by Benjamin ParryIn the same way that painting is the art of creating visualization, music is the art of creating sounds, and so forth, games are the art of creating a particular type of agency.
Identifying Skill Issues - by Benjamin ParryA multitude of memes attest to the almost-painful feeling that comes with breaking a learning streak, and Duolingo appears to be getting even better at this: in the last four years, the ratio of daily active users to monthly active users has grown from 22 percent to 30 percent.
Identifying Skill Issues - by Benjamin Parry"Unlike most real-world domains, such as work and school, virtual environments can offer intrinsic need satisfactions with immediacy, consistency, and density".
Identifying Skill Issues - by Benjamin ParryBut, if we can find ways to allow young people to make long-term commitments to become part of a tradition of tacit knowledge and skilfulness we will all be richer for it.
The Art of Training Young People - by Benjamin ParryIn the short time I’ve been in Toronto I’ve been met with so much love, grace, and opportunity. It feels like this has all been possible thanks to the last 6 months of my life getting actively involved in community, and meeting those who have showed me the people really do make all the difference.
evening glow - by kel - the (un)comfy cornerif you don’t live the way you believe, you inevitably believe the way you live.
living the life you believe in - by Nix 🕊How do you become a human being? You create space to regularly explore your why before your how. Learn how to become uniquely you.
A practice for meaning-making and belonging: fourth spacesA fourth space exists for private communities centered around meaning-making.
A practice for meaning-making and belonging: fourth spacesAgency has three core inputs: The hook: consuming a personal narrative that inspires agency The catalyst: receiving the resources and/or validation needed to realize an idea The sustainer: finding community and role models
Manifesto · Moth FundEven if you don’t personally mind sleeping late, you offload the costs onto people around you, either by not being present or worrying them. At the very least, be healthy for them.
look what the cat brought in - by Anson YuFocus on building things that last: long-standing relationships, capability, and intuition.
look what the cat brought in - by Anson YuIn an endearing turn of events, I feel that many of my role models have changed from people that I read about, to people I know.
look what the cat brought in - by Anson YuGive without expectation. It will come back to you
look what the cat brought in - by Anson YuThe important part is knowing what someone brings out in you and whether you can mutually unfold in a healthy way — this requires patience, devotion to conversation, and speed of iterating toward one another.
all these things that I've done - by Nix 🕊your journeys are enriched by each other’s directional force.
all these things that I've done - by Nix 🕊Relationships are generative
all these things that I've done - by Nix 🕊At some point getting what you want is within reach with enough resources and will. The harder thing is to know what is worth wanting
all these things that I've done - by Nix 🕊Great love exists in letting go. Most beautiful things end but that doesn’t stop them from being beautiful
all these things that I've done - by Nix 🕊we must consistently focus on the betterment of forward actions
all these things that I've done - by Nix 🕊you only need to meet one or two right people or do one or two right things.
all these things that I've done - by Nix 🕊You are dealt the hand but you are also playing the game.
all these things that I've done - by Nix 🕊I find myself dreaming that one day, my dad will call me and tell me that he connected with his own memories of his parents, and now fully understands the magnitude of the pain I endured.
Transcending My Father's Abuse - by Valerie - Val's PalsWorking with great people is one of the best parts of life.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me - Sam AltmanGet back up and keep going.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me - Sam AltmanInspiration is perishable and life goes by fast. Inaction is a particularly insidious type of risk.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me - Sam AltmanFast iteration can make up for a lot; it’s usually ok to be wrong if you iterate quickly. Plans should be measured in decades, execution should be measured in weeks.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me - Sam AltmanLong-term orientation is in short supply; try not to worry about what people think in the short term, which will get easier over time.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me - Sam AltmanCommunicate clearly and concisely.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me - Sam AltmanOptimism, obsession, self-belief, raw horsepower and personal connections are how things get started.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me - Sam AltmanIf there’s anything I believe, it’s that everything worthwhile comes at the end of the arduous, quiet trek, the days digging into the work and hoping and waiting, the long days of trying.
highly concentrated effort - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixthe best place to be, is where you currently are.
To Enjoy UWaterlooI am more at peace than I’ve ever been in my entire life. I feel confident and decisive in the direction my life is heading, I’m thinking about what really matters to me and acting in line with those values, I’m spending time with the people I care about, and I am no longer comparing myself to lives-I-might-have-lead or the people around me. Everything feels possible now that I’m off the treadmill, and I no longer feel anxious about the future. There is so much goodness to come.
Long overdue life updates - by Joss - box.In the absence of people who made you love a place, how can we still call it home? The people I love are everywhere and my home is in all of them.
yearning for permanence - by kel - the (un)comfy cornerGreat creative work is historically done together, across backgrounds and disciplines, in small, high trust groups. This is the foundation of boundary pushing work - in engineering, science, art, and more. On top of that....there are increasingly few, low stakes ways for people to make interest, values aligned friends IRL. This is made worse by an endless stream of catered consumption. It becomes pretty clear that we should do two things: gather and create. Socratica aims to help people do both.
SocraticaI’m not sure if I believe in past lives, nor have I ever felt a déja-vu moment as if I've been reincarnated. But one thing's for sure is that although I don't know all the lifetimes I might have lived, I'm grateful for the lifetime I'm in that led me to meet all the people I love.
a thousand years - by kel - the (un)comfy cornerThe more you want something, the closer you are to obtaining it, the harder it is to handle rejection.
rejection - by Elaine - manners & mysteryCulture is a kind of circular feedback where you attract and hire the type of people who are interested in that specific culture, and they then make it stronger. If you can’t decide what kind of company you are in, you likely won’t have consistent culture, which creates tension or “culture clashes.”
A better way to build software - by Sar HaribhaktiSince there are many existing tools, some of the feedback comes from the fact that people are used to things, not necessarily that they are the right way to do things. We internally talk about this tension as art and science. The science part is your research to understand the customer’s problems. The art part is you use your intuition and judgment to build. I’d say Linear is maybe 80% of our intuition and 20% of what people have asked for.
A better way to build software - by Sar HaribhaktiIt’s a heavy front-end product, and most actions involve managing things in the UI. You need to make it fast and eliminate friction as much as possible. A tool like Linear is about communicating and coordinating work. Getting people to use the tool requires making it as frictionless as possible and, ideally, something they want to use instead of having to use it.
A better way to build software - by Sar HaribhaktiMeeting new people is dreary but it’s also liberating, figuring someone out, squeezing all the facts and knowledge you can like juice from a lemon.
your destiny - by ines - delicateIt’s all very paradoxical: that the ability to constantly communicate has made us bad communicators, that instant access to all forms of entertainment would leave us with so few touchstones, that surveilling kids doesn’t necessarily make them safer, that the absence of limitations also often means the absence of creativity — and that the particular form of abundance we’ve fetishized can feel so sad, so unspeakably sterile.
The Sterile World of Infinite ChoiceWhen you find a worthy cause, and you have natural edge and interest, you should throw your whole heart into it.
direct your intensity well - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixFinding things that’re simple, hard, and enjoyable is the secret recipe to stay in the game long enough to achieve earned success. At some point, it becomes inevitable.
#45: Simple, Hard, Enjoyable - The 3 Ingredients to Earned Success🏃🏻♂️The Yerkes-Dodson law shows that peak performance occurs at moderate levels of stress. Flow, the feeling of being totally immersed in the present activity, only emerges in this sweet spot.
#45: Simple, Hard, Enjoyable - The 3 Ingredients to Earned Success🏃🏻♂️If “happiness is not something that you can find, acquire, or achieve directly”, then creating the conditions for happiness to emerge is the next best alternative to strive for.
#45: Simple, Hard, Enjoyable - The 3 Ingredients to Earned Success🏃🏻♂️Earned success is the belief that you’ve created value in your life and in the lives of other people. Creating value is just another way to say feeling useful.
#45: Simple, Hard, Enjoyable - The 3 Ingredients to Earned Success🏃🏻♂️Treat everything that happens to you as material and write it down. Don’t let someone tell you your experience doesn’t matter—you’re the one who gets to decide if it matters. Give yourself agency.
