In Bali, you take a taxi to your hotel. The streets are narrow and the side roads are unpaved despite the various blocks of homes. There seems to be an inverse correlation between the smoothness of your ride and the amount of locals in the area. As you approach the city center, the juxtaposition of the excess targeted towards tourists against the poverty everywhere else feels comical in its absurdity.
