I made a spontaneous trip to San Francisco in the middle of July this summer. I hadn’t visited since I did summer school there when I was 10. It’s a rather pleasant city. You turn a corner and the street drops away so steeply it feels like it might continue straight into the bay; you climb a few steps and suddenly the water is there, framed between rooftops and telephone wires, shifting with the fog.
