I have just recovered from a 2 hour nap after the most expensive meal of my life. Nat and I have decided it will be the most expensive meal of our lives. A supposedly fun thing I'll never do again. Some observations: I came in, I told Nat, with low expectations. But this was a restaurant I had spent at least a full afternoon my middle school years watching Youtube videos about. It's as if I'd always known the four symbols on the door and the high-but-not-too-high ceiling and the corner table. I remember the guy on Eater talking about the corner table. As I walked through Madison Square Park, I saw a boldly slanted Shake Shack, and a memory dug up from some rabbit-hole years ago reminded me that this was the first Shake Shack in the world. It was fully plant-based, and, as a new vegetarian myself, I'd become enamored by the idea of a restaurant with opinion.
