For example, if all of your best friends agree on one thing, and you’re like, yeah, they just don’t get it: you’re in denial. If anyone who knows you well is like this situation is really bad, and you’re like well actually it’s fine: you’re probably in denial.
therapy as a way of aligning with your subconsciousOne thing that therapy has made me realize is that very few things happen for no reason. If you suddenly fall in love, if you develop a weird compulsion, if you’re incredibly anxious for no reason… there is a reason. You have to look for the reason. If there are all these things going weirdly wrong in your life and you aren’t looking for a reason (what a strange coincidence…), you’re probably in denial.
therapy as a way of aligning with your subconsciousWe suffer when we disappoint ourselves most of all.
letter from: bergen, norway - by Nix 🕊Love is rare and we are lucky to experience it, even briefly.
letter from: bergen, norway - by Nix 🕊One reason to go to a high-school reunion is to feel like one’s past self—old friendships resume, old in-jokes resurface, old crushes reignite.
Are You the Same Person You Used to Be? | The New YorkerThe good news, though, is that among romantic pairings in which both individuals are educated, they tend to be happier. Their divorce rates are lower and their satisfaction with their marriages is higher.
All the Single Ladies - Rob Henderson's NewsletterIn their book, The Demise of Guys, psychologists Philip Zimbardo and Nikita Duncan suggest that the answer is twofold: fake war and fake sex.
All the Single Ladies - Rob Henderson's NewsletterFor each hour less the group spent in work, time spent at leisure activities rose about an hour, and 75% of the increased leisure time was accounted for by gaming.
All the Single Ladies - Rob Henderson's NewsletterOn the other hand, when there is a surplus of women relative to men, women are more likely to adapt to men’s preferences. They compete with one another to be what men want. And this is what we see on campuses with more female students relative to male students. On colleges with more women than men, such as Sarah Lawrence, casual sex is more widespread. Hookup culture is more prevalent, and men are less interested in entering committed relationships. Women are more willing to do what men want in order to be with them.
All the Single Ladies - Rob Henderson's NewsletterIn other words, all other things equal, a man with a master’s degree is nearly twice as likely to get a match than a man with a bachelor’s degree. Perhaps something to keep in mind, if you are interested in obtaining a graduate degree and active on Tinder.
All the Single Ladies - Rob Henderson's NewsletterLoneliness is more than just a bad feeling. When people are socially disconnected, their risk of anxiety and depression increases. So does their risk of heart disease (29 percent), dementia (50 percent), and stroke (32 percent).
Is Self-Care Preventing Us From Solving The Loneliness Epidemic?Just the same as we choose to stay or to leave, we opt into closeness or distance in our relationships with others. Words of effort: I’ll call you tomorrow. I’ll buy the books you recommend. I’ll listen to your playlists. How are you doing? This reminded me of you.
always in flux - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixAt some point in adulthood you come to the jarring realization that closeness simply doesn’t happen by accident anymore.
always in flux - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixTherein lies the paradox: you can’t know if someone you’ve just met will become a good friend without investing a lot of time. Friendships don’t just happen. They grow over time, nurtured by care, attention, and mutual interests.
loneliness - by Elaine - manners & mysterySo much pressure is put on people going into the “dating trenches” i.e. the apps. Instead of having the singleminded goal of I must find a boyfriend asap, I’m thinking, how do I maximize my chances of making new friends?
loneliness - by Elaine - manners & mysteryTo grow beside a friend or lover, knowing that you will poke and prod at each other as you take shape but unafraid of the resulting scar tissue — this is the good stuff.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princessThere is one way to reject this: make the choice to love someone who is as flawed as you are.
no good alone - by rayne fisher-quann - internet princess“most people are just SO boring” or “they’re just going through the motions” or “why can’t i ever meet someone smart.”
Rediscovery - by Anita Ilango - letters to Nobody ❦As I get older, I find I’m meeting more and more people who’ve let go of what they care about, lost what brings them real joy, forgotten that even seeking joy itself takes consistent effort.
Rediscovery - by Anita Ilango - letters to Nobody ❦And women only benefit when the relationship is good2. Men benefit when a relationship exists.
Men Are Lonely. But Women Are Being Attacked. - by lyzPeople in intimate relationships are often isolated. They see fewer people, they do fewer things. And there are many people who have a better life when they’re not in an intimate relationship because they have a very wide social life. So we have to stop thinking that if you don’t have a romantic relationship, you’re incomplete.
Men Are Lonely. But Women Are Being Attacked. - by lyzThe couples I admire are probably often stressed out and fight and disappoint each other, but there really is this thoroughline of playfulness, of really having a great time with the other person, that I think a lot of relationships lack.
having fun - by Ava - bookbear expressYou see these Twitter threads about supposedly attractive 30-year-olds making 500k per year who can’t find partners and their problem is so obviously not that no one wants to date them (barring egregious personality problems not mentioned in the Twitter threads, of course). It’s that they don’t know how to search, and they don’t know what they’re searching for. And even they found it, they wouldn’t know how to appreciate what they had. In other words, I think that they don’t know how to have fun.
having fun - by Ava - bookbear expressAs a civilization gets more cosmopolitan, it will get more androgenized and the differences between the sexes will become blurred. Androgenization peaks right before the civilization begins to go into terminal decline (see her speech).
The Butterfly Dance Ends Everything — Asleep ThinkingThus, America’s empire will end – the way all empires end – not with a resounding military defeat but with the Butterfly Dance.
The Butterfly Dance Ends Everything — Asleep ThinkingThese days I acknowledge I’m just a living composite of everyone I’ve ever loved.
critical coincidences - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixIn the simplest possible terms, this is how to get out of a funk: Recognize you are in a funk. Write out what you feel like doing. Write out the opposite of those things. Do the opposite list. You are out of the funk, back to being yourself.
getting in/out of a funk - by Isabel - Mind MineWhen asked, men are much more likely to leave a theater feeling inspired to better themselves in the likeness of the strong male character, while women tend to talk more about the catharsis they felt for the characters themselves.
complementary - by Molly Mielke - Mind MudThe east understood this in their conception of the unique union between yin (sun, male, consistency, order) and yang (moon, female, darkness, chaos).
complementary - by Molly Mielke - Mind MudNothing is permanent or still. It flows. The tea gets cold, and the food gets warmed, my friends’ laughing faces glowing and lit by candlelight. We stop brutalizing life by counting the minutes when we understand that beauty and meaning blooms through unquantifiable sensations, perceptions, experiences, far beyond our control.
feeling behind - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixEverything in the world has its reasons for doing what it does… all we can do is go with those things. As we take them in, we survive, and deepen.
feeling behind - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nix“you’ll never find the same person twice, not even in the same person.”
feeling behind - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixModern men, it seems, have forgotten what it means to be a man. What can be done? Let’s teach them how to fight.
Why We Must Teach Our Boys How to Fight — Countere Magazine“All men need to know how to fight,” Fitch told me. But not because “we need to be violent and cause injury to others—it’s the process of learning how to fight is what's important. Through the learning process, a man is consistently put in bad positions and forced to fight through them.”
Why We Must Teach Our Boys How to Fight — Countere MagazineTherefore, there is a moral imperative for our best players to choose good, hard quests.
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie WagnerIn the 1980s, a venture capitalist could truthfully say their investment was the difference between life or death for an important, generational technology company.
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie WagnerExiting your first startup only to enter venture capital and fight your peers for allocation in a hot deal is a bad quest.
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie WagnerTo grieve properly is to look at what has passed squarely in the eye, to bow your head and say thank you, and to move on from it with acceptance and gratitude (I know: easier said than done). The challenge with grief is that most people view it as dark, black, dense. They only see the shadow of grief—the pain in it. But if you step into grief and surrender to it fully, it’s actually quite pure, quite human.
growing pains - by Isabel - Mind Mineyou can still love a partner you are no longer compatible with, you can still love friends you no longer have much in common with, you can still feel affection for a city you grew up in while understanding that it’s no longer a fit for you.

It's So Sad When Old People Romanticize Their Heydays, Also the 90s Were Objectively the Best Time to Be AliveNew subcultures are almost always inventing a fake mainstream to complain about, usually with therapeutic language, and nothing’s less cool than applying therapeutic language to places other than therapy.
It's So Sad When Old People Romanticize Their Heydays, Also the 90s Were Objectively the Best Time to Be AliveNow we’re never doing anything - we’re always getting through something to get to something else to get through, using various time-saving techniques that maximize the amount of time we have to get through things while keeping our attention divided into a thousand things we then get through.

Nat Turner's slave rebellionThe group spared a few homes "because Turner believed the poor White inhabitants 'thought no better of themselves than they did of negroes.'"
Nat Turner's slave rebellionThe relation between Being and Doing is this: Being sets the stage for Doing, and Doing defines Being. Who you are allows for what you can do, and what you do refines who you are.
Find Purpose by Eliminating What Isn't - by SherryWe’re trapped in a Never-Ending Now — blind to our place in history, engulfed in the present moment, overwhelmed by the slightest breeze of chaos.
The Never-Ending Now - David PerellIn fact, it might seem like the worst idea for someone who has struggled with insecure attachment. It’s like throwing a person with a fear of water into the deep end. But I actually think it can also be the best thing for someone with attachment wounds because in order for ENM to work, both partners need to learn to become more securely attached to each other and securely attuned to their own needs.
