Therapy culture, both a social media zeitgeist and a real-world medical practice, increasingly frames leaning on the people in your life as a form of emotional abuse. There is a very real conversation about “trauma dumping” that teaches young people that telling your friends about your problems is an unacceptable imposition and provides helpful scripts for “setting boundaries” by refusing to listen or help. Therapy culture teaches us that we’ve been “conditioned” or “parentified” into toxic self-abnegation, and celebrates “putting yourself first” and “self-care” by refusing to be there for oth…
The Load-Bearing RelationshipThe last decade is defined by a shift away from a role ethic and towards a contractualist one. In a contractual moral framework, you have obligations only within relationships that you chose to participate in—meaning, to the children you chose to have and the person you chose to marry—and these can be revoked at any time. You owe nothing to the people in your life that you did not choose: nothing to your parents, your siblings, your extended family or friends, certainly nothing to your neighbors, schoolmates, or countrymen; at least nothing beyond the level of civility that you owe to a strang…
The Load-Bearing RelationshipWhat if we’d never stopped talking? I wondered. Who would I have been? What would we have shared? What stories could she have told me?
Catapult | The Pain of Losing Your First Language | Kristin Wongmy life was still governed in some odd way by the idea that everything was only temporary. Nothing that I did, I told myself, was the real thing
The Escape Artist | The New YorkerZweig is best known for his novellas (notably The Royal Game, Amok, and Letter from an Unknown Woman – which was filmed in 1948 by Max Ophüls), novels (Beware of Pity, Confusion of Feelings, and the posthumously published The Post Office Girl) and biographies (notably of Erasmus of Rotterdam, Ferdinand Magellan, and Mary, Queen of Scots, and also the posthumously published one on Balzac)
Stefan Zweig - WikiwandThe Scandinavians were struggling not only against the bosses they could see — the ones in their workplaces — but against the ghosts of bosses past, the ones who bequeathed them their technological tools. And those bosses, the ghost bosses, were, and still are, harder to defeat. Even a revolution won’t do it; the day after, you’ll still be surrounded by machines encoded with politics hostile to yours.
The Engineer’s Predicament - The DriftIrresponsible AI is eroding democracy and civilization right now
The false choice holding up congressional action on AI | The Hillsure that someone smarter than you had articulated what you felt already. You waited for them to slip you the answer in a poem. You wrote incessantly.
How to let goYou needed something just slightly out of reach to work towards with manic intensity. You needed to delay pleasure as much as you could because you had become unable to fully feel it.
How to let goYou read something which you thought only happened to you, and you discovered it happened 100 years ago to Dostoyevsky. This is a very great liberation for the suffering, struggling person, who always thinks that he is alone. This is why art is important.
you like books and think they are your friends - by AvaWe are the unreliable narrators in the stories of our own lives.
How Minds Change - by David McRaney | Derek SiversIt remains noise if it doesn’t seem to match a pattern in that layered archive of prediction.
How Minds Change - by David McRaney | Derek SiversYou can’t state your needs out loud because you feel like you don’t deserve that much, and also you’ve spent your whole life pretending you don’t have needs at all. You can’t respect the needs of the people around you because you suffer under the illusion that you’re serving their needs around the clock. You feel this way because you don’t give yourself anything you really need. You feel this way because you don’t know what you need or want.
Lashing Out Hurts You the MostOriginality in choosing problems seems to matter even more than originality in solving them. That's what distinguishes the people who discover whole new fields. So what might seem to be merely the initial step — deciding what to work on — is in a sense the key to the whole game.
How to Do Great WorkWhat are you excessively curious about — curious to a degree that would bore most other people? That's what you're looking for.

On Self-Respect: Joan Didion’s 1961 Essay from the Pages of Vogue | VogueLike Jordan Baker, people with self-respect have the courage of their mistakes. They know the price of things. If they choose to commit adultery, they do not then go running, in an access of bad conscience, to receive absolution from the wronged parties; nor do they complain unduly of the unfairness, the undeserved embarrassment, of being named corespondent. If they choose to forego their work—say it is screenwriting—in favor of sitting around the Algonquin bar, they do not then wonder bitterly why the Hacketts, and not they, did Anne Frank.
On Self-Respect: Joan Didion’s 1961 Essay from the Pages of Vogue | VogueThe charms that work on others count for nothing in that devastatingly well-lit back alley where one keeps assignations with oneself: no winning smiles will do here, no prettily drawn lists of good intentions.

Neuralink and the Brain's Magical Future — Wait But WhyLanguage gives a group of humans a collective intelligence far greater than individual human intelligence and allows each human to benefit from the collective intelligence as if he came up with it all himself

Why it’s as hard to escape an echo chamber as it is to flee a cult | Aeon EssaysWhen we take networks built for social reasons and start using them as our information feeds, we tend to miss out on contrary views and run into exaggerated degrees of agreement.
Why it’s as hard to escape an echo chamber as it is to flee a cult | Aeon EssaysMy model now is that I substituted "is there a monologue of upsetness in my conscious mental loop?" for "am I feeling upset?". So from my perspective, it just felt like I was very in control of my feelings.
