It's because anything interesting scores poorly and gets kicked out. (…) I've tried to argue that maybe the thing that's making it distinctive, and score poorly, actually would stick out if you presented it to these people the way the real world presents it. And I’ve never won that argument

Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie Wagnerall of these founders have deep personal motivations to keep building, even while they have no financial incentive to do so.
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie WagnerFor our best players with exceptional fundraising and hiring superpowers, hard quests are difficult. But for everyone else, they are nearly impossible. Therefore, there is a moral imperative for our best players to choose good, hard quests.
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie WagnerAt the same time the Wright brothers were experimenting with flight, a sea of successful financiers filed paperwork that shuffled numbers on the global spreadsheet. Such men worked hard — maybe — and still their efforts were forgotten.
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie WagnerSuch quests would never be remembered
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie Wagnermany former founders leverage their success to become public pseudo-intellectuals, speaking on podcasts and broadcasting their thoughts on popular tech Twitter accounts. But unless you are a truly generational thinker, proselytizing is far less impactful than building a specific, better version of the future
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie Wagnertoday there are more people "helping the builders" than actually building
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie Wagnercommon traps lead our most skilled, resourced players to select bad quests after achieving their first big success.
Choose Good Quests - by Trae Stephens and Markie WagnerIf someone with no background in nuclear physics, no money, and no network chooses not to work on nuclear fusion it doesn’t really matter. In fact, their chances of success were so low that pursuing such a goal would have actually been bad — an opportunity cost, where they could have worked on a more natural fit that would have enriched their lives and the lives of those around them

Pluralistic: Tiktok’s enshittification (21 Jan 2023) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory DoctorowThe carny allocated a giant teddy bear to that poor sucker the way that platforms allocate surpluses to key performers – as a convincer in a "Big Store" con, a way to rope in other suckers who'll make content for the platform, anchoring themselves and their audiences to it.

The Technium: The Reality of Depending on True FansThe sort of artist who survives at the long tail is the sort who would be happy doing nothing else, who willingly sacrifices security and comfort for the chance to communicate something meaningful, hoping to catch the attention of those few in the world who seek what they also find meaningful
