I often don’t feel ready for the things in my life. Perhaps the learning is that I never will. But I can be open: to momentum, to change.
"I'm not ready" but it's happening anyways - by Nix 🕊It’s like reading a book as a kid and re-reading it as an adult. The renewal of understanding. So many themes, nuances become available when you can contextualize them.
"I'm not ready" but it's happening anyways - by Nix 🕊Everyone changes on their own internal timeline. As much as you crave or deeply desire someone to change their thinking patterns, it’s out of your control.
"I'm not ready" but it's happening anyways - by Nix 🕊Volition. The power to choose and determine. That you are responsible for the people you love, the friendships you nourish, the body you inhabit, the thoughts you curate.
self trust - by Nicole - startingfromnixthe act of loving something should be generative and consuming — it should add something to who you are and lead you to a new understanding of all the parts that were already there.
self trust - by Nicole - startingfromnixYou already are everything you are seeking
you find what you look for - by Nicole - startingfromnixlife slips by without us noticing anything at all. I don’t want to forget how lucky I am. How loved. I want to pay attention to the right things. Allow them to breathe, expand into my life.
you find what you look for - by Nicole - startingfromnixMaybe that’s why I’ve always been drawn to dreamers, particularly people who action on their dreams. Because they really look for ways to turn it into a reality. In that gaze is intention. Intention magnifies everything you see.
you find what you look for - by Nicole - startingfromnixWhat you expect shapes how you engage with the world.
you find what you look for - by Nicole - startingfromnixI believe the world is a mirror for our expectations.
you find what you look for - by Nicole - startingfromnixHow they booked train tickets, how they took notes, how they read different genres than I did, how they paid attention. Plainly, I was inspired by them.
finding the right people - by Nicole - startingfromnixYour closest friends should make you feel free, but also safe. Safe like — you can say what’s on your mind. You can set a boundary. You can take this risk. You can change. I will still love you on the other end. That’s a good litmus test. Do they make you feel free and safe?
finding the right people - by Nicole - startingfromnixRelishing the company of people who sometimes make you feel, by comparison, uninformed, closed to new ideas, disordered, defensive, rigid, fearful, unambitious is an acquired skill. It kicks up shame. It humbles you. It dares you to grow.
finding the right people - by Nicole - startingfromnixall of my closest friends are free in ways I am not. More at ease socially, more carefree, more emotionally aware. They differ in what they value, what they desire, what ‘winning’ looks like.
finding the right people - by Nicole - startingfromnixDoesn’t the fear of losing something waste the loveliness of it?
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixI used to fear losing people so much. Now I realize we’re always losing each other regardless — the old versions of us never last.
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixA web allows things to fall through, like a sieve. Some things are not meant to be caught. The things that are meant to be caught and held will nourish us
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixThings can be wonderful and delicious and deeply intimate, and still have an inherent expiry date. Internal spaciousness is precious. You can’t afford to hold on to everything.
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixGood decisions feel like floating, not sinking.
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixsomeone meets you in a moment of your life, and you meet them for a moment in theirs. It doesn't have to last forever. It just has to teach you something.
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixEvery year it feels like I’m accumulating things and yet also getting rid of them. Throwing myself into experiences and forming a clearer semblance of myself on the other side.
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixSomething I’ve been thinking about recently: the only constant in adulthood is reluctantly letting go. Of our attachments to places, people, things. All of it melts slowly away. In its place, prioritization rises softly to the surface — Who to love. Where to be. What to do.
people come and go - by Nicole - startingfromnixMeeting you was an unlikely combination of fate, chance and agency. Against all odds, the right ships weather the storm. I think this all the time: the best people in my life feel like small miracles.
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊We could lose each other at any moment, but I’ll reach for you anyways.
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊Of course I’ll hurt you. Of course you’ll hurt me. Of course we will hurt each other. But this is the very condition of existence. To become spring, means accepting the risk of winter. To become presence, means accepting the risk of absence.
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊Intimacy requires vulnerability; reward requires risk.
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊The challenge is equalizing the part of me that seeks to control everything with the part that knows everything unfolds in the way it should.
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊I can’t fully control when the right people show up in my life. All I can do is be truer to myself. Unapologetically myself.
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊But most of it is coincidence and serendipity: being in the same city in the same time. Finding one another in an unexpected corner of the world.
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊some people in our lives are ships that pass in the night: people who encounter one another in a transitory, incidental manner and whose relationship is without lasting significance; two or more people who almost encounter one another, but do not do so.
dear friend or perfect stranger - by Nix 🕊everyone is entangled. No one is built in isolation. Our worlds become brighter, more whole, more coherent when we accept that we are both anchor and ship.
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixI am fully responsible for the intimacy I allow myself to have.
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixIntactness can co-exist with intimacy
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixI’d like to think you can share yourself with someone without losing yourself. And you can share yourself with the world without abandoning yourself
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixthere’s something really tender and important about being deeply intertwined with the people in your life.
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixEvery deep relationship you have with anyone else is also a portal into the relationship you have with yourself.
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixI think most of us both fear and crave intimacy with other people because it also means closeness to self, proximity to the center.
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixart and love are the same thing: it's the process of seeing yourself in things that are not you.
intimacy thresholds - by Nix 🕊 - starting from nixI used to think that I always had to justify everything to myself—that I needed to be completely rational. Then I slowly started to realize that my emotional reaction to any situation was often way more accurate than any of my thoughts.
not disappointing myself - by Ava - bookbear expressBefore I started writing I had a million excuses for why I shouldn’t bother. But I felt the happiest when I was writing.
not disappointing myself - by Ava - bookbear expressfret about not doing the Right Thing—how I often succumb to the trap of optimization, the desire to perform for others.
not disappointing myself - by Ava - bookbear expressEvery time you’re given a choice between disappointing someone else and disappointing yourself, your duty is to disappoint that someone else. Your job, throughout your entire life, is to disappoint as many people as it takes to avoid disappointing yourself.
not disappointing myself - by Ava - bookbear expressYou'll probably have to find the city where you feel at home to know what sort of ambition you have.
Cities and AmbitionThe Impressionists show the typical pattern: they were born all over France (Pissarro was born in the Carribbean) and died all over France, but what defined them were the years they spent together in Paris.
Cities and AmbitionThe critical years seem to be the early and middle ones of your career.
Cities and AmbitionIt's in these more chaotic fields that it helps most to be in a great city: you need the encouragement of feeling that people around you care about the kind of work you do, and since you have to find peers for yourself, you need the much larger intake mechanism of a great city.
Cities and AmbitionEconomic power, wealth, and social class are just names for the same thing at different stages in its life: economic power converts to wealth, and wealth to social class.
Cities and AmbitionVisually, Paris has the best eavesdropping I know.
Cities and AmbitionNo matter how determined you are, it's hard not to be influenced by the people around you.
