if population density is similar, we predict larger core areas of pika colony and subsequently smaller distances between two core areas in severely degraded grasslands.

in such open conditions, they may also be more easily detected by predators (Wheatley et al. 2020). Therefore, on severely degraded grasslands where pikas require larger territories to acquire enough food, they may build more extensive burrows with more burrow entrances, which may exacerbate grassland degradation.

Wolves use diverse tactics to track partially migratory prey: Current Biology
wolves exhibited a range of movement responses, including migrating, commuting, and remaining resident. Additionally, some packs moved pups from den sites to rendezvous sites along elk migration routes, or even within elk summer range, challenging the long-accepted notion that juvenile carnivores act as spatial anchors.

It’s because of how heavily Hawai‘i’s economy is dependent on tourism and so I kind of wanted to get a better idea of how did this happen? Why did this happen? Can we shift our economy to something else more sustainable for for our people, for the ‘āina [land]? And then, you know, there is such a thing as sustainable tourism, too. I’m not saying we should eliminate tourism completely because you can’t deny the fact that it does provide jobs. It’s just there has to be a better way to go about it.

my mom is a Haole (Caucasian) woman who was once a tourist. Then later when she moved here she met my dad who’s Local. My mom is a school teacher who has always put her keiki [children] first. She’s heavily involved with Local politics and a strong advocate for Local and Native issues. You can usually find her and my Aunty JoAnn at protests together.

from COVID when we saw no tourists coming to the islands and there was no traffic, no one on the beach, everything was clean. Places I didn’t see fish all my life suddenly had a lot of fish.

This film explores how tourism, development, and an influx of people moving to Hawai‘i has damaged Kaua‘i. Drawing on interviews with residents, the film is meant to inspire people to put back into practice the Hawaiian values of Mālama ʻĀina and Aloha ʻĀina.

They selected plants that feed people spiritually and intellectually: lei plants, plants used in lāʻau lapaʻau (traditional Hawaiian medicine) and ceremonial plants. All but three of the original plants are native; the others are non-native and non-invasive plants with important uses to the community.

Prior to 1778, Puʻulani was covered in Indigenous agroforests and native forests. Later, Puʻulani was used for cattle grazing. After grazing ended, non-native trees and other plants moved in. When the team began the restoration in 2018, Puʻulani was covered with mostly Java plum, fiddlewood and octopus trees, which are typical of non-native forests across low elevation lands in Hawaiʻi.

“We tend to think of noise as a problem that makes systems less predictable, less optimized,” says Raphaël Sarfati, a physicist at Goodfire AI, who was also not involved in the work. “[But] we see everywhere that noise, a little bit of noise at least, is really, really good for driving systems toward a better optimum.”

Pastoralism, through the continued use of grazing and fire, promotes these natural disturbance regimes to maintain biodiversity (Fuhlendorf et al. 2010, Yuan et al. 2016).

surfing the green wave, allows animals to eat plants at their most nutritious, when they’re full of nitrogen and proteins and low in indigestible matter. Such freshness is fleeting, and so grazers undertake large migrations to track the new greenery as it crests across the landscape. Over the past decade, scientists have shown that mule deer, barnacle geese, elk, elephants, Mongolian gazelles, and a dozen other species all do this.

“Moderate, well-managed grazing can be important for promoting higher carbon storage,” says Luong, who joined Rausser College this July. The practice has been shown to stimulate root growth, and bigger roots mean more carbon stays in the soil, helping to mitigate climate change.

native plants in California’s rangelands evolved with disturbances from cultural burning and wild grazing animals like tule elk and pronghorn. Now, many wildflowers need disturbances to germinate. It’s a role that the hooves of cattle play very well in certain contexts, says rangeland ecologist Justin Luong, an assistant professor of working lands for people and the environment.

In response to a question about the source of the pika problems, one herder explained: The earth has its bcud (essence/fertility). If people are disrespectful to the guardian mountain deities, or dig the ground, or do improper things, the fertility will be exhausted. Without this fertility, groups of hungry ghosts are attracted. The mass reproduction of pikas is a manifestation of the depletion of this essence. Land is like human skin. If the flesh of the skin rots, it will attract flies, because flies are also hungry. What should be done? People should perform good deeds and cease doing destr…

Ecological research that characterises pikas as keystone species, on the other hand, posits that pikas prefer low grass heights and thus appear in large numbers as a result of degradation due to other processes such as overgrazing, climate change, and policy-induced reduced livestock mobility.
