AGROFORESTRY AND CARBON H AWAI ʻ I AGROFOR EST R Y FA C T S H EET In 2018, the State of Hawaiʻi committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2045 to reduce the impacts of climate change. Achieving such a drastic reduction in net carbon emissions will require moving away from fossil fuels as well as changing land management practices to sequester and store carbon. Tree biomass is approximately 50% carbon, so increasing tree cover can contribute to enhanced carbon storage above-ground. Tree planting can also affect soil carbon storage, which globally store approximately the same amount of carbon as the atmosphere and vegetation combined. Agroforestry systems that are managed to minimize soil disturbance and maximize organic matter input are more likely to help maintain or enhance soil carbon storage. WHY USE AGROFORESTRY FOR CARBON SEQUESTRATION? Soil carbon is a component of soil organic matter and one of the most important indicators of healthy soil. Soil carbon supports many important ecos
Page 3 of 3 WANT TO USE AGROFORESTRY TO STORE CARBON? Best practices for managing agroforestry systems to store carbon include reducing disturbance to soils, increasing organic matter in soils, and minimizing fire risk. It is also important to consider what you will do with any plant material (vegetation) removed from the site, for example non-native trees that are cleared before planting agroforestry species. Make sure to use this vegetation in a way that does not significant contribute to carbon emissions. For example, chop trees and other woody debris and leave it in place at…
