Why are we flooded with a deluge of books, articles, and papers? Why doesn’t software help us decide what to read now, what to read later, and what to read never?

Why is it still so much harder to navigate a digital book than paper? Why can’t we easily save a place, jump backwards, hop forwards, and cross-reference tables, charts, and other other documents side-by-side as nimbly as we can with paper?

Why is it still so hard to search our books, articles, notes, and highlights? Why are we using Google to search the entire internet and find something we read last week?

"reading for entertainment" versus "reading for betterment".

Why can’t I easily return to the context surrounding a specific highlight? Why can’t I highlight and save images, tables, and rich text formatting, despite these being crucial to the reading experience? Why does it take so long for my highlights to sync? Why is it so hard to get highlights out of my PDFs?

Breakthroughs come from discovering new connections between seemingly disparate pieces of information. Thus the first step for each new project should be to assemble as many inputs in one space as possible. A thinking tool should make it easy bring together inputs of all kinds and remix them freely.

they felt performative, self-conscious of others witnessing their messy work-in-progress, or irritated when a collaborator acted on suggestions before the editing pass was complete. When doing creative work, they preferred to have space to ideate and experiment in private, sharing their progress only when they are ready to do so.

If there are commands that cannot apply to more than one object, then disable that command: don’t remove it from the menu.

I often place the “default command” first in the context menu. This is the command that would occur if the user double clicked on the object (for instance on the desktop this command would be “Open”

The menu should NOT contain commands that do not apply to the target object. Try to avoid commands that are generic to the page, such as “Refresh”. Focus on what’s useful for this thing the user is pointing at.

The context menu does NOT need to contain ALL the commands for the target object — in fact it usually should not because doing so will make the menu long and unwieldy.

The big problem with the menu control is that it can get very repetitive and clutter a screen. A solution to this is to only show the menu control during mouse-over (hover) to reduce this clutter.
