Remembering the summer I turned twenty brings me into a whirling heat as distinctive in my memory as any nostalgia. One part must have been the physical beauty of Santa Fe. The sky stretched out flat and blue and pressed down low against adobe houses, baked into shades of terracotta and tangerine. Bunches of chili peppers hung from the roofs and glittered under direct sun. A hot, stagnant day, every day, a picture which you thought had never changed and would never change.
