I recently came across Your Smile, by Eric Zhang. I don’t think I can fully do justice to my emotions upon reading the post, but I wanted to write a brief response in an attempt to capture them on (e)paper. To begin with a non-sequitur… I’ve always had this yearning to be a “good person”. To this day, I still don’t really know what that means—but somehow, I seem to have stumbled into having a nose for it in the people I meet. I’ve been lucky enough that some of those people decided to stick around in my life as my closest friends. They’re the reason that I say “no” when someone inevitably asks me if I would have made some drastically different choice in my life—I have no idea why they decided to stay, so I’m not willing to gamble losing them for whatever else I’d be making a different past choice to optimize.
