It feels as though it is only when I am paying attention that I am truly alive — eyes wide open, awake to the kaleidoscopic unfoldings around me.
Like a tattered rag, my focus has been frayed lately. Eyes glued to the palm-sized screen, repeatedly scrolling and switching between the same applications for a disconcerting amount of time. The entire motion feels as though it was driven by an almost inexorable impulse. So I’ve begun to ponder about attention: how easy it is to lose attention, how human it is to yearn for attention. And yet, how life-giving it is to pay attention, and how liberating it is to let go of the need to receive attention.
