On day zero of SPARC,1 we sat in a large circle, about half the size of the Lassen common room, all fifty-ish of us (thirty students, twenty staff) facing each other and the props our dear director Yan had set up at the circle’s center—a blanket and two plushies, an octopus and a shark, the latter as large as some of the smaller students.
