I recently received, and politely declined, invitations to serve on the Program Committees (that I had been servicing for years) for several Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) conferences. This isn't a rejection of the field (I have been declining such requests from AI/ML conferences too), but a reflection on where I believe my limited time and expertise can be most impactful, particularly in the context of rapid AI advancement. But in thinking about my priorities and existing commitments, I’ve come to a difficult conclusion: HCI, in its current form, is increasingly irrelevant to the cutting edge of AI.
