When is the best time of day to build a habit? Research shows that it’s first thing in the morning. In one study, students who stretched right after they woke up “achieved automaticity” (i.e. made it a daily habit) about 50 days sooner than the ones who stretched at night.1 It turns out that the same holds true for meditation. Data from Calm, the popular sleep and meditation app, shows that new meditators are more likely to keep up their practice 180 days later if they do it early in the morning versus other times of day.2 The research is not clear on why exactly this is the case. But perhaps it has something to do with the fact that most people’s mornings tend to be more consistent day to day, whereas their evenings are more variable. I have personally found that whatever I incorporate into my morning routine is more likely to become a habit. I suspect the same holds true for most people.
