Research – Jennifer Soong, PhD
At Colorado State University I am applying my expertise in soil carbon cycling to better inform measurements of the soil carbon sequestration potential of regenerative land management in croplands, rangelands, forests, wetlands, and other managed ecosystems. At Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, I worked on the DOE funded Belowground Biogeochemistry Terrestrial Ecosystem Science project. I showed that there is strong agreement among Earth System Models that soil warming is predicted to occur nearly in concert with air warming, and that the warming penetrates into deep soils. I managed a field experiment testing how whole-soil profile warming effects soil carbon and found that sub-soil carbon is more vulnerable to loss with warming than topsoil carbon. I also investigated how the primary limitation of microbes by carbon availability, rather than nutrient availability as for plants, impacts whole ecosystem responses to perturbations. Through the University of Antwerp, I am co-PI on a
