For almost every Ukrainian, there is now a February 28th moment. Where were you when your president was attacked by the hyenas of the White House and when he—perhaps unwisely—chose to scratch back? For a piece I wrote this weekend, I turned first to those who may matter most: the soldiers on the front line. For them, the uproar in Washington was mostly background noise to the artillery and other explosions. But Volodymyr Zelensky’s defiance seems to have struck a chord with them. Those who could fired off messages in group chats. An officer in a secret unit with access to some of the chats claimed the moment seemed to turbocharge morale: “Everyone says Sanych [Mr Zelensky] did well.” The officer himself shrugged off the spat.
