Drag and the Irrepressible Vibrancy of Self
It’s been causing me to think deeply about what a sense of self means, which I really appreciate. Here are my initial thoughts ~ To begin, I am but a minnow in a sea of adoring fan fish. All I can do is offer one small perspective. If I were to take the metaphor even farther, I am really just a terrestrial creature hanging out in warm shallows, feet in the foam, perhaps imagining mermaids. If I were to take it far enough to scare me, I’d see “Straight man ‘discovers’ drag” op cit. The subcultures of drag and queerness that I don’t yet understand offer a beautiful sense of belonging that is so well captured in the show. I bet that’s what appeals to most folks who watch it, folks who can’t feel that way in the world we live in. I’d like to learn more about that side of it, because I’ve never experienced that feeling in that way.
