"The starting point for organizing educational content or political action must always be the present, concrete situation, reflecting the aspirations of the people." – Paulo Freire, 1968 By and large, school is conceived as a space protected from the brutality of the world “outside.” It was understood as the privileged place of vita contemplativa, as opposed to the context of labor, the domain of vita activa. But what happens when we pretend school has nothing to do with that perceived exterior space? The institution is not separate from the “real world” and if we were looking for safety there, it doesn’t exist unless we create it. In a time where we are encouraged to stay apart from each other, almost a censoring of our bodies in physical space together, it’s an act of resistance to gather.
