What I keep forgetting (and maybe you do too) is that every time I’ve actually closed a door and forced a step forward, life got bigger, not smaller.
Dropping Out and Other Low-Risk Life DecisionsChoose or don’t. Either way, certain options will inevitably recede. This is why, in spite of the cost of risk having never been cheaper, the experience of taking risk has never felt worse.

Dropping Out and Other Low-Risk Life DecisionsKierkegaard called anxiety “the dizziness of freedom,” the vertigo of standing above the abyss of possibility, knowing that the moment you choose, you murder every other version of yourself. Plath likened wanting to preserve optionality to never wanting to pluck figs off a tree and losing them all in the ineluctable passing of time:
Dropping Out and Other Low-Risk Life Decisionsthe group that could swap ended up liking their prints less. The researchers found that people prefer to make changeable decisions rather than unchangeable ones because they do not realize they may be more satisfied with the latter.
Dropping Out and Other Low-Risk Life DecisionsVenture capital is a market that prices potential—a check a token of conviction that a person will convert potential energy into kinetic.
Dropping Out and Other Low-Risk Life DecisionsMy fear is that my mirror reflects someone who moves on after the quick dopamine hits of starting down a path and receiving validation, but when the going gets tough, who will not be there in the end. I worry, constantly, that I have become so delusionally good at selling my potential that I will forget how to choose to be evaluated on my own results.
Dropping Out and Other Low-Risk Life DecisionsAs an investor, my favorite question to ask founders was: what about this problem keeps you going after it stops being fun? Or: why do you believe you’ll want to work on this for the next 10+ years?
Dropping Out and Other Low-Risk Life DecisionsShe shared that one of her favorite things about startups is that they force people to do myriad activities that have little to do with their backgrounds, and that, in successful cases, people grow enormously as leaders as a result.
Dropping Out and Other Low-Risk Life Decisionstaking on a difficult project with some amount of public accountability. This can be large or small: a lecture series, a business, a blog, a house, a child, etc.
50 things I know - by Sasha Chapin - Sasha's 'Newsletter'When you feel glued to the sofa or to your phone when you KNOW you have something else to do (for me, it’s always unpacking my suitcase, which sits like an open Venus fly trap for weeks), count down ‘5-4-3-2-1’ and then get up. The countdown switches my brain into Action Mode.
100 things I know - by Mari Andrew - Out of the BlueTo resolve an argument, begin by saying “I can see why you…” which is a way to make the conversation about feeling rather than facts.
100 things I know - by Mari Andrew - Out of the BlueHere’s a tip for connecting more easily with them: Learn about geography. While traveling, it makes any conversation so much richer to have a good idea of where different countries are situated (and, as a bonus, which languages are spoken there!).
100 things I know - by Mari Andrew - Out of the BlueOne: When emailing someone to ask for a favor, start by asking the favor first, THEN move on to small talk. I always rush through the “Hope you’re well!” paragraph to get to the Big Ask. It reads as much more genuine when it follows after the request.
100 things I know - by Mari Andrew - Out of the BlueNo matter how hard you try, you will always look back with a certain remove and wonder what the hell you were thinking.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsYou should pay special attention to the thoughts that gnaw at you despite them being against your self-interest to think.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsIf you can train yourself to ask “is there a better way to do this?” at random intervals ten times a day, you will become unstoppable.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsForgiveness is a thing you do for yourself, not the other person. In fact, the reason to overcome most conflictual feelings is not for the benefit of others but for the benefit of your own soul. That said, every once in a while, someone will do something truly unforgivable, in the sense that — try as you might — you simply can’t forgive it. Accept this and move on, rather than spending years trying to find a way.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful Fictions“Every strange thing you’ve ever been into, every failed hobby or forgotten instrument, everything you have ever learned will come back to you, will serve you when you need it. No love, however brief, is wasted.”
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsBeing able to live in the “world as it is,” rather than getting permanently fixated on the “world as it should be,” is a superpower.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsKnowing when to quit is one of the most valuable skills in the world
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsYou can save yourself a lot of grief when dealing with someone who’s upset by leading with: “Are you in venting mode or solutions mode?”
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsAgency is a morally neutral trait, and amoral people have more natural talent at it because they never learned the rules in the first place.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsMany social dynamics are paradoxical — social acts that seem weak from the inside, when undertaken without apology, actually read as very strong. For example, being willing to say “I’m wrong” or “I don’t know.”
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsPsychic cost is the integral of cognitive load over time — so do the things you most want to avoid first.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsIdeas are cheap and easy to find; execution is everything.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsProductivity is not effort x time — if you want one quick way to burn out, it’s believing that you just need to crank harder in circumstances where your effort is not efficiently creating results.
50 things I know - by Cate Hall - Useful FictionsWith latent diffusion, the diffusion process works more or less the way it would for an image. The difference is that the pixelated video frames are now mathematical encodings of those frames rather than the frames themselves. This makes latent diffusion far more efficient than a typical diffusion model.
How do AI models generate videos? | MIT Technology ReviewTo generate movie clips, a diffusion model must clean up sequences of images—the consecutive frames of a video—instead of just one image.
