On such a structuralist conception, physics describes the world in terms of its spatiotemporal structure and dynamics (changes within that structure) and says nothing about what, if anything, underlies that structure and dynamics.
Russellian Monism (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)Tools developed to push against a potential “tyranny of the majority” have allowed majorities to be subjugated to the will of minority interests time and again. Whether it’s by professional associations, police unions, homeowner associations, or wealthy individuals, majority rule has repeatedly been hijacked.
Who Really Runs America? - The AtlanticAmericans who are waiting for Trump to cross some imaginary red line neglect the fact that they have more leverage to defend American democracy today than they will tomorrow, or next week, or next month.
A Ticking Clock on American Freedom - The AtlanticDo not make the mistake of assuming you still have time. Put another way: You think you can wait and see, and keep democracy intact? Wanna bet?
A Ticking Clock on American Freedom - The AtlanticAuthoritarian leaders topple democracy faster than you can imagine. If you wait to speak out against them, you have already lost.
A Ticking Clock on American Freedom - The Atlanticook around, take stock of where you are, and know this: Today, right now—and I mean right this second—you have the most power you’ll ever have in the current fight against authoritarianism in America.
A Ticking Clock on American Freedom - The AtlanticGrammar is a piano I play by ear, since I seem to have been out of school the year the rules were mentioned. All I know about grammar is its infinite power. To shift the structure of a sentence alters the meaning of that sentence, as definitely and inflexibly as the position of a camera alters the meaning of the object photographed.
Joan Didion: Why I Write ‹ Literary HubGrammar is a piano I play by ear, since I seem to have been out of school the year the rules were mentioned.
Joan Didion: Why I Write ‹ Literary HubI write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.
Joan Didion: Why I Write ‹ Literary HubBy which I mean not a “good” writer or a “bad” writer but simply a writer, a person whose most absorbed and passionate hours are spent arranging words on pieces of paper.
Joan Didion: Why I Write ‹ Literary HubDuring the years when I was an undergraduate at Berkeley I tried, with a kind of hopeless late-adolescent energy, to buy some temporary visa into the world of ideas, to forge for myself a mind that could deal with the abstract.
Joan Didion: Why I Write ‹ Literary Hubsetting words on paper is the tactic of a secret bully, an invasion, an imposition of the writer’s sensibility on the reader’s most private space
Joan Didion: Why I Write ‹ Literary HubIn many ways, writing is the act of saying I, of imposing oneself upon other people, of saying listen to me, see it my way, change your mind. It’s an aggressive, even a hostile act.
Joan Didion: Why I Write ‹ Literary HubWas it naive to hope that an innovative billionaire who built space rockets could also understand the complex life of someone who scrounged for a $3.90 copay?
The Scramble to Save Rural Health Care From DOGE - The AtlanticThis idea, that capitalism, slavery, and colonialism are the forces that have shaped our contemporary world, is central to the exhibit. And it occurred to me, listening to Flanagan, that this was the exact sort of story that Trump and many of his allies would like to excise from museums, classrooms, and every other realm of American life.
The Real Meaning of Trump's Smithsonian Executive Order - The AtlanticTake the infinity back into your life. Let it seep through everything. Fall in love with iteration, with doing, and you will find life expand before you.
Infinite Practice. - by iL. - BluezoneWhen is an oak tree perfect? As a young sapling, quivering in the eastward gust? As a fervent teen growing strong and flashing green? Perhaps, at a ripe old age, when its wrinkles show the contours of centuries? What about the moment before it dies? The answer is every moment. There is no perfection, there is only iteration. Onward ripening till infinity. Mastering your chosen craft takes time. We know this, and we still make it harder for ourselves. Let go of the reins. Just move.
Infinite Practice. - by iL. - BluezoneThe utilitarian conception, which I call "action as production," holds that ac- tion is a way of making use of the world, conceived as a causal mechanism. According to the rational intuitionist conception, which I call "action as asser- tion," action is a way of acknowledging the value in the world, conceived as a realm of status
Three Conceptions of Action in Moral Theory on JSTORNature has therefore gifted omnivores with two seemingly contradictory instincts. Neophilia, the drive to try new things, is necessary for obtaining sufficient calories when familiar-and-safe foods are in low supply. Neophobia is the reluctance or refusal to eat anything unknown, which could harbor pathogens (flesh of any kind) or toxins (e.g., puffer fish, rhubarb leaves, toadstools)
Is Disgust Related to Morality? - JSTOR DailyWe are social animals who value amiability, cooperation, and trust. Yet certain circumstances do call for a little bit of standoffishness instead of unquestioning camaraderie.
Is Disgust Related to Morality? - JSTOR DailyWe are far less rational and far less correct in our thinking than we’d like to give ourselves credit for. The side-effect of heuristics is that we all suffer from cognitive bias
Kahneman Fast and Slow Thinking: System 1 and 2 Explained by SUEHeuristic methods can be used to speed up the process of finding a satisfactory solution. Heuristics can be mental shortcuts that ease the cognitive load of making a decision.
Kahneman Fast and Slow Thinking: System 1 and 2 Explained by SUEKahneman’s work demonstrates that people struggle with statistics and cannot reason the probable outcomes of their decisions. A second very important insight from his work is that our decisions are driven by heuristics and biases.
Kahneman Fast and Slow Thinking: System 1 and 2 Explained by SUESomehow we can accept our irrationality, or at least understand it when it’s explained to us, but we keep making the same mistake with others. When trying to influence someone, we tend to forget they are irrational too. We often try to convince somebody with rational arguments or facts. We love to tell someone about the benefits of our products or services or ideas.
Kahneman Fast and Slow Thinking: System 1 and 2 Explained by SUEOn average we all have about 35,000 decisions to make each day. These differ in difficulty and importance.
Kahneman Fast and Slow Thinking: System 1 and 2 Explained by SUEThe mind which has become accustomed to the freedom and impartiality of philosophic contemplation will preserve something of the same freedom and impartiality in the world of action and emotion. It will view its purposes and desires as parts of the whole, with the absence of insistence that results from seeing them as infinitesimal fragments in a world of which all the rest is unaffected by any one man’s deeds.
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western PhilosophyWhat it calls knowledge is not a union with the not-Self, but a set of prejudices, habits, and desires, making an impenetrable veil between us and the world beyond.
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western PhilosophyKnowledge is a form of union of Self and not-Self; like all union, it is impaired by dominion, and therefore by any attempt to force the universe into conformity with what we find in ourselves.
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western Philosophydoes not aim at proving that the rest of the universe is akin to man. All acquisition of knowledge is an enlargement of the Self, but this enlargement is best attained when it is not directly sought. It is obtained when the desire for knowledge is alone operative, by a study which does not wish in advance that its objects should have this or that character, but adapts the Self to the characters which it finds in its objects.
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western Philosophyit removes the somewhat arrogant dogmatism of those who have never travelled into the region of liberating doubt, and it keeps alive our sense of wonder by showing familiar things in an unfamiliar aspect.
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western PhilosophyThe man who has no tincture of philosophy goes through life imprisoned in the prejudices derived from common sense, from the habitual beliefs of his age or his nation, and from convictions which have grown up in his mind without the co-operation or consent of his deliberate reason.
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western PhilosophyThey have supposed that what is of most importance in religious beliefs could be proved by strict demonstration to be true. In order to judge of such attempts, it is necessary to take a survey of human knowledge, and to form an opinion as to its methods and its limitations.
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western PhilosophyHas the universe any unity of plan or purpose, or is it a fortuitous concourse of atoms? Is consciousness a permanent part of the universe, giving hope of indefinite growth in wisdom, or is it a transitory accident on a small planet on which life must ultimately become impossible? Are good and evil of importance to the universe or only to man?
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western PhilosophyIt is true that this is partly accounted for by the fact that, as soon as definite knowledge concerning any subject becomes possible, this subject ceases to be called philosophy, and becomes a separate science.
Bertrand Russell – On the Value of Philosophy – The Originals: Classic Readings in Western PhilosophyPhilosophy, like all other studies, aims primarily at knowledge. The knowledge it aims it is the kind of knowledge which gives unity and system to the body of the sciences, and the kind which results from a critical examination of the grounds of our convictions, prejudices, and beliefs
