is about as insane as if, during the Cold War, the majority of the world’s uranium deposits had coincidentally been in West Berlin
Notes on Taiwan - by Sam Enright - The FitzwilliamThe explanation I heard for this equanimity is that Taiwanese people are so used to worrying about their continued existence that they don’t have the mental effort to also worry about day-to-day interactions.
Notes on Taiwan - by Sam Enright - The FitzwilliamThe hot springs are another example of both China and Taiwan seeming like nice places to be old. I was smiling at friendly old people in Daan Park with their friends, who were playing mahjong, singing, practising tai-chi, and so on.
Notes on Taiwan - by Sam Enright - The FitzwilliamThe frequency issue could be solved by giving every word in a large dictionary a frequency score, and if the program encounters words not found in the dictionary, a "Best guess" frequency score could be arrived at by length, presence or absence of cognate words, number of syllables, etc. Upon using the software for the first time, the reader could fill out a questionnaire giving information about age, education, and reading habits. This information could set the additional time allotted for words of a given frequency score. Moreover, the program could adjust your "reading level" and display-ti…
Software that speeds up your reading to 500 words per minute. (The average reading speed is 120-180 words per minute). Not sure what to think of it. : r/booksI'm dyslexic and have a hard time reading, But with just this websites intro i was reading up to 500wpm in just a minute or two . Not having to scroll my eyes across a page made all the difference. I need this program!
Software that speeds up your reading to 500 words per minute. (The average reading speed is 120-180 words per minute). Not sure what to think of it. : r/booksBeing in the habit of writing means that when I want to communicate the barrier is low and I have lots of practice.
Lifelong investmentsThe more coworkers I've had, the better I'm able to work with new ones.
Lifelong investmentsThe more systems I work on, the more I have a feel for others, being able to rely on my knowledge of "I would probably build it this way, so it probably works like this."
Lifelong investmentshow to ask good questions in the field
Augmenting Long-term Memoryhat a powerful result in the field looks like
Augmenting Long-term Memorythe temptation to stockpile knowledge against some day when you'll use it
Augmenting Long-term Memorydistributed practice outperforms massed practice
Augmenting Long-term MemoryIn other words, having more chunks memorized in some domain is somewhat like an effective boost to a person's IQ in that domain.
Augmenting Long-term MemoryThey found that world-class chess experts saw the board differently to beginners
Augmenting Long-term MemoryMy somewhat pious belief was that if people focused more on remembering the basics, and worried less about the “difficult” high-level issues, they'd find the high-level issues took care of themselves.

Augmenting Long-term MemoryWe are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.
Augmenting Long-term Memorywe become what we remember, so we must be careful what we remember
Augmenting Long-term MemoryWhat you Ankify is not a trivial choice
Augmenting Long-term MemoryGetting past “names don't matter”

Augmenting Long-term Memorydon't think this mixing does any harm
Augmenting Long-term MemoryBreak things up into atomic facts. Build rich hierarchies of interconnections and integrative questions. Don't put in orphan questions. Patterns for how to engage with reading material. Patterns (and anti-patterns) for question types. Patterns for the kinds of things you'd like to memorize.
Augmenting Long-term Memorybreak things down into atomic questions
Augmenting Long-term Memoryfuzzy about where exactly my mistake was
Augmenting Long-term MemoryThe solution was to refactor the question by breaking it into two pieces. One piece was: “What's the basic command and option to create a Unix soft link?” Answer: “ln -s …”. And the second piece was: “When creating a Unix soft link, in what order do linkname and filename go?” Answer: “filename linkname”.
Augmenting Long-term Memory* Many people have written accounts of how to read using personal memory systems. My thinking was particularly stimulated by: Piotr Wozniak, Incremental Reading.
Augmenting Long-term Memoryask much better Anki questions
Augmenting Long-term Memorynot emotionally invested in
Augmenting Long-term MemoryI find Anki works much better when used in service to some personal creative project.
