By the end of the decade, American electricity production will have grown tens of percent; from the shale fields of Pennsylvania to the solar farms of Nevada, hundreds of millions of GPUs will hum
Introduction - SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: The Decade AheadMaking what you like explicit and conscious, by naming it, increases its power significantly. This, I’ve found, is the last piece of the puzzle
What I Do When I Can’t Sleeplike smelling spices, you haven’t connected the two sides of your brain: one part of it that likes something, and the other part that can speak about it. Connecting the two is what we—as creative people looking to make more of what we like—are after.
What I Do When I Can’t SleepThe place to start when you’re trying to develop taste is to find and record the things you like.
What I Do When I Can’t SleepThe truly great creatives I’ve run into in business or in art can all do this incredibly well. They can look at a painting, a pitch deck, a product, or a novel and reel off exactly what they like and why.
What I Do When I Can’t SleepArticulating what you like is the only way to make great stuff. And it’s a skill that can be learned. Interestingly, it’s one of the things that AI is great at teaching.
What I Do When I Can’t SleepInterestingly, it’s one of the things that AI is great at teaching.
What I Do When I Can’t SleepArticulating what you like is the only way to make great stuff. And it’s a skill that can be learned
What I Do When I Can’t SleepWhat important task do you do for the project you work for? How does that project fit into creating a more glorious future? How is that future pleasing to God, the proper order of things, and your own felt value instincts?
Quit Your JobLife necessarily involves these fatal leaps of faith—bets which you have no certain way of knowing will work out but which define your whole existence and require your intense effort.
Quit Your JobTrue ascent beyond the kept life comes only from taking bold, determinate leaps of faith on real constructive projects.
Quit Your Jobescaping this meaningless servitude to our own capital was Thoreau’s main point in Walden. You don’t actually need the money; in reality, the money needs you to give it a worthy purpose, but everyone gets this backward
Quit Your JobThe ones who had children who visited were happy and the ones who didn’t weren’t.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressIn high school I volunteered for a couple years at a care home for people with dementia.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressWho want to answer the question of: what if I want to find meaning and belonging without doing anything too weird? Like, what if I don’t want to be obsessed with effective altruism and I don’t want to convert to Islam and I don’t want to go on missionary trips to Chile and I don’t want to prove that the DMT aliens are real and I don’t want to complain about wokeness on Twitter and I don’t want to live in a polyamorous commune and I don’t want to become a monk?
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressI feel like I’m writing for people like me, who are seekers, who are interested in history but don’t want to regress, who don’t resonate with all the things sold to us in modernity, who are looking for structure without masochism
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressBut we need the Other in order to feel real. People are doorways out of solipsism.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressLife is not something you perform for the benefit of other people. When you perform for other people, you rob yourself of the chance to relate to them in a real way.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressIt’s Narcissus mesmerized by his own reflection: you’d rather watch yourself looking good than actually live.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressWe are taught to aspire to prestige, taught to fetishize the idea of the thing instead of enjoying the thing itself.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressI don’t think our culture does a great job at making good marriages seem possible and aspirational, or parenthood seem desirable and fulfilling, or finding a true vocation seem achievable
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressBut I do believe there’s a way in which culture in the past offered people easier entry points into meaning, and that’s what people today are nostalgic for.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressIn some corners of the Internet there’s a fascination with traditionalism, and criticism of the ways the openness and optionality of modernity have left people feeling lost. I’ve always felt like, look, I could never be a traditionalist, because I don’t want to give birth to five kids without anesthesia and spend half of my day cleaning up around the farm
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressIt’s a big thing to love a single person well for a long time. It’s really hard to find something you really love to work on.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressI believe that love of others, love of vocation, love of nature are the best ways to connect to oceanic feeling
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressAs an adult I moved to San Francisco and realized slowly over several years that love is the best entry point to meaning.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressI’d say that what I was looking for throughout my childhood and adolescence and young adulthood was what Romain Rolland called “oceanic feeling” in a letter to Freud in 1927: “the sensation of eternity, of ‘being at one with the external world as a whole.’” In other words, I was looking for the presence of God. The feeling, not the narrative.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressAll of this now strikes me as tragically bereft. I understand now that while I received an excellent material education, what I was looking for was a spiritual education.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressHappiness was the result of achieving, of consuming, of possessing.
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressAs a child, I wanted to be happy, but the world around me assured me that only path to happiness was the one I laid out above
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressWe live in a society that shows us many paths to status but very few to meaning
entry points - by Ava - bookbear expressCapitalism rewards things that are both rare and valuable. You make yourself rare by combining two or more “pretty goods” until no one else has your mix…
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsIt’s not enough to just be competent at what you do — learn its history, and figure out where it’s going next. Teach, critique, and discuss. Explore and define the next frontier.
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsFind time to invest in your comparative advantage, because it’s another non-linear asset to compound over time
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsThis is also why I’m a fan of bringing networks together with events, content, and investment
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsFind leverage. Create work assets that compound over time so that it spreads even when you sleep.
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingssometimes semi-random exploration leads to the best ideas.
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsSerendipity loves randomness and hates routine. This is why I’m so positive on sending outbound emails to interesting people, hosting dinners and events that bring together smart folks, and publishing any and all thoughts online.
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsI’m convinced that you can create an environment where 10x work is more likely to come up. That’s because at its core, 10x work thrives on agency, serendipity, and new information
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsThese are what I’ll call “10x work” — these are key tasks where your doing them well/poorly really matters, and the result might define your professional output for an entire year (or more).
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsImagine the thousands of tasks you did in the past year and sort them by impact. How many of them actually moved the needle?
The case against morning yoga, daily routines, and endless meetingsIt’s another way of saying you can be intelligent but it has to manifest in a certain aesthetic way. It can’t be an isolationist or boring intelligence
Relationships Have Changed But Charming Men Have NotThat’s not to say you can’t have a boring job—plenty of people do—but you can’t be a boring person completely. You need to show a kind of intelligence and creativity that hits on an instinctual level. Women know all men have a poet inside of them, it comes out when you really love something.
Relationships Have Changed But Charming Men Have NotWe all know a couple that seems a little mismatched in the looks department until you see how they interact with each other
Relationships Have Changed But Charming Men Have NotThere’s even a theory that assortative mating is linked to rising autism rates. Two people with similar genetic predispositions get together, and suddenly you see more cases.
Relationships Have Changed But Charming Men Have NotRelationships have changed so much lately. Take marriage for example. For most of human history, it was the beginning of adulthood—get married young, move in together, find a job, build your life. Now? It's the opposite. Marriage is the final step, something you do once you’re already stable, once you've "made it." It's no longer the gateway into adult life; it's the last goal.
Relationships Have Changed But Charming Men Have NotSome things, however, remain unchanged. A man who is charming, funny, interesting, or creative can still go a long way in attracting a woman today even he isn’t in the same socio-economic group.
Relationships Have Changed But Charming Men Have NotTaking “risks” is Payoff Space domain advice, taking risks in consistency space can get you fired.
The 4-Hour LifeYou can spend years dating hundreds of women, and one day find yourself sleeping next to the same woman for 10 years. And the only thing that changed is meeting that person that one night. That’s payoff space.
The 4-Hour LifeThe Payoff Space member has a “pull”. This gets him up in the morning. This motivates him
