The new brand platform is centered on a powerful purpose—to be the beacon of thoughtful and thought-provoking media, bringing light and trust in a media landscape characterized by fragmentation and sensationalism. To ensure every touchpoint furthered this purpose, we needed to create memorable brand cues in the visual identity and brand architecture that would help the brand stand out in a saturated market.
PBS
So PBS came to Lippincott with an ask: evolve its brand to help it compete for viewer attention, engagement, and loyalty across all channels.

“We as account people are trained to always say yes to clients and just do whatever it takes,” she explained. “What I'm realizing now is that our clients want that brutal honesty. It's OK to say, ‘You know what? That is really not our bread and butter. Here's what we're better for.’”

There wasn’t a feeling of community that the employees felt with each other. However, it’s a completely different story with Ritts and Powell.

“Nearly any person can learn to improve his or her creative abilities. Talent may be a mysterious entity, yet the creative process tends to follow predictable pathways. By breaking down this process into steps and implementing conscious methods of thinking and doing, designers can open their minds to vibrant solutions that satisfy clients, users, and themselves.” — Ellen Lupton

Noise is a metamorphic concept that accents the experience of a sound space as much as it is defined through socio-culturally informed attitudes. It is also a thread that ties sound space to personal space due to the fact that it can be an aural experience of intrusion demanding socially normative responses. The word can refer to a broad range of sonic characters, from neutral “sound” to loud clamorous “din,” and can even have visual and social referents. In many cases it tends toward disruptive connotations but exactly what kind of acoustic phenomenon it refers to, and the way it is framed, c…
The Consideration of Personal Sound Space: Toward a Practical Perspective on Individualized Auditory Experience. by Elen Fluegge
Our sound spaces are filled with so many layers of potential sound that what is interesting is not just this content of our sound space but how differently a person might hear it. Many sounds that comprise the ambiance of our sound spaces are types of drones or hums; others are background sounds we choose ourselves, such as the use of television and radio as accompaniment media; and yet others might be acoustic signals, such as sirens, which can belong to the background atmosphere or be picked out and focused on instead. In this case, experience may be a deciding factor in the identity of the …

When you repeat elements, the intervals between those repetitions can create a sense of rhythm in the viewer and a sense of movement. Musicians create rhythm in the spacing between notes, effectively making these “silent” gaps play off the notes. Designers insert spacing between elements to make rhythm. There are, broadly speaking, five types of visual rhythm.

Like Richter, theirs is a cool vision, detached from maudlin sentiments of all kinds, political or otherwise, but, unlike Richer, that detachment is not founded on irony and the pleasure taken in their project is not the consumer’s pleasure of expenditure without return, of process without aim.

They wanted to give it a scientific basis’, objected Hilla. ‘It was quite dreadful’, continued Bernd. ‘It was a bad experience’, Hilla agreed, ‘Working with them, we felt for the first time that we weren’t free.’

Archives that survive must inevitably be kept in some kind of houses of memory, whether real or virtual. The act of remembering involves both storing and retrieving: it is not a passive process, especially in the digital age. To be able to confirm the original context and provenance of archives will become more important than ever.
