Initially, Mr. Musk had hoped to build a compound for his families on hundreds of acres that he and his companies owned outside Austin, near Tesla’s headquarters, according to four people familiar with the plans. But that idea appeared to fall apart after the Justice Department began investigating whether Tesla’s resources had been used on a secret effort to build a glass house for Mr. Musk’s personal use, according to The Wall Street Journal. In August 2023, Mr. Musk said he was “not building a house of any kind,” in a post on X. By that time, Mr. Musk had begun touring Austin for homes that …

I believe in the aliveness present in all things. I want to write every day and read books and to be in love and live near all my friends and work on what I know to be true and good. For me, that’s salvation—that’s ambition.

The Blank Sheet Method: Before reading, write what you know about the subject on a blank sheet. After each reading session, add new information in a different color. Review the sheet before your next reading session. Store completed sheets in a binder for periodic review. (Hint: I often re-write them for clarity).
From Passive Reading to Active Learning: The Blank Sheet Method
The more extreme the opportunities to gain prestige and gain wealth, and the more plentiful these opportunities become, the more this mismatch shows up. This mismatch can feel like a kind of trap because it feels like you’ve half-won, but the other half is always just out of reach (or at times, still very far away).

Over 60% of Gen Z workers report having some kind of anxiety disorder, according to a report from OneDigital, an HR consulting firm, and “hey-hanging” can make their minds go to the worst places. It could be fake kindness, or maybe they’ll later deliver news about layoffs or performance concerns. But it could also be a simple, harmless question that needs to be talked through.
WTF is hey-hanging? (and why is it stressing everyone out) - WorkLife
The average worker spends about 37% of their time at work in meetings or coordinating them. Workers spend about half a workday per week just scheduling meetings. That time spent in meetings and managing them costs employers an annual average of over $29,000.

In Italy, the centrality of rest is captured in the phrase dolce far niente—the sweetness of doing nothing. Dolce far niente is not just part of life. For Italians, it is the point of life.
Let's make 2024 the year of saying no to productivity culture
While it's true that many successful writers, painters, and thinkers in previous generations worked less and spent more time relaxing and resting than almost anyone in America does today, they didn't do it so they would be productive—at least not in the way we think of that word today in the United States. They did it because it used to just be considered normal behavior to have hobbies, friends, and even to just do nothing. FDR had enough free time to have a stamp collection while he was president of the United States, for crying out loud.
