Since HIV treatment already costs hundreds of thousands of dollars over the lifetime of a patient, policymakers could see a net savings if gene therapies become a “one- a nd- d one” treatment— a l ifelong cure.
free_health_care_for_all.pdfSangamo has been tight- l ipped about the price of their gene thera - pies, if any are ever approved for general use. A company spokesperson told reporters their HIV therapy would certainly be “premier- p riced” if it was ever brought to market, costing upward of $100,000 per treatment. It would not actually cost that much to make the therapy. Biotech compa - nies like Sangamo plan to mark up their new medical products to recoup past investments in research and development, and also to support new scientific work in the future
free_health_care_for_all.pdfBy embracing risks that others would find unacceptable, members of the HIV- p ositive community also opened up broader experimental pos - sibilities for humanity. Jay Johnson participated in an experiment that helped pave the way for Carl June’s later experiments that treated the can - cer of Nicholas Wilkins and Emily Whitehead. 5.pdfIn our study, attitudes on DHM appeared to be influenced by cultural, religious, family, or personal beliefs, particularly for African American participants, who deemed DHM use to be less acceptable and amongst whom there was a perception of decreased family support for DHM use.
An Alternative to Mother’s Own Milk: Maternal Awareness of Donor Human Milk and Milk Banks - Lindsay Ellsworth, Julie Sturza, Kate Stanley, 2021In our study, participants who were more knowledgeable about milk pasteurization were more likely to choose a donor milk bank as a source for DHM as opposed to a friend, relative, or the internet. This suggests that, with appropriate education about DHM processing, more women will likely consider safe sources.
An Alternative to Mother’s Own Milk: Maternal Awareness of Donor Human Milk and Milk Banks - Lindsay Ellsworth, Julie Sturza, Kate Stanley, 2021In addition, the majority of participants in our study indicated that they would choose formula over DHM for their infant despite strong agreement with the statement that human milk was the best source of nutrition for their infant. This suggests a lack of knowledge about DHM as a feeding alternative.
An Alternative to Mother’s Own Milk: Maternal Awareness of Donor Human Milk and Milk Banks - Lindsay Ellsworth, Julie Sturza, Kate Stanley, 2021DHM was defined in this study as human milk that is provided to an infant from a source other than the infant’s mother to summarize all types of human milk use outside of mother’s own milk; however, this definition does not directly allow for a distinction between attitudes and knowledge of PDHM compared to informal milk sharing in maternal responses.

An Alternative to Mother’s Own Milk: Maternal Awareness of Donor Human Milk and Milk Banks - Lindsay Ellsworth, Julie Sturza, Kate Stanley, 2021The majority of participants previously had minimal experience using donor human milk and limited knowledge regarding donor human milk and milk banks.
An Alternative to Mother’s Own Milk: Maternal Awareness of Donor Human Milk and Milk Banks - Lindsay Ellsworth, Julie Sturza, Kate Stanley, 2021Moreover, if donor human milk was the only option available, they chose donor human milk from a relative or friend (60%, n = 40) over a milk bank (40%, n = 26).
An Alternative to Mother’s Own Milk: Maternal Awareness of Donor Human Milk and Milk Banks - Lindsay Ellsworth, Julie Sturza, Kate Stanley, 2021When presented with a hypothetical scenario, participants chose formula (89%, n = 59) over donor human milk (11%, n = 7) for their infant

The use of human donor milk | The BMJDecisions about the need for ongoing human donor milk are regularly reviewed, taking into account infant growth, fluid balance, and nutritional requirements.2
The use of human donor milk | The BMJCommon indications for use of pasteurised donor milk
The use of human donor milk | The BMJParental consent is typically required before the use of donor milk in most human milk banks, including those from Brazil, France, India, and North America.13
The use of human donor milk | The BMJWhat is the rationale for using human donor milk?
The use of human donor milk | The BMJSince 1979, however, WHO and Unicef have recommended the use of pasteurised human milk from a human milk bank to feed low birthweight and preterm infants as the first alternative when mothers are unable to provide their own milk.6
The use of human donor milk | The BMJPasteurised donor milk can also be used to supplement the mother’s own milk in order to meet an infant’s nutritional needs and can be administered in the same ways as the mother’s own expressed milk
The use of human donor milk | The BMJGather clinical evidence on benefits for breastfeeding of donor human milk and derived products.
Call to action for equitable access to human milk for vulnerable infants - The Lancet Global HealthConduct formative research to better understand motivations, barriers, and trade-offs for women donating, selling, and sharing their milk and for their infants receiving donor human milk.
Call to action for equitable access to human milk for vulnerable infants - The Lancet Global HealthA crucial and overriding challenge is ensuring the appropriate use of donor milk so that it serves as a bridge to support breastfeeding, rather than displacing a mother's own milk and breastfeeding.9, 10
Call to action for equitable access to human milk for vulnerable infants - The Lancet Global HealthTo address this need, over 600 human milk banks have been established in more than 60 countries, but most are in Europe, the USA, Asia, and Brazil, with a nationalised system of more than 230 human milk banks in Brazil alone.4
Call to action for equitable access to human milk for vulnerable infants - The Lancet Global Health5.1 Limitations This study was conducted in an urban setting and did not fully represent perceptions among rural residents. Additionally, the quantitative data collection was only carried out among women in health facility settings. This might create a bias in the estimates as those who may not be able to access health facility services are likely to be systematically different in many important ways, including knowledge, attitudes, and practices. However, to widen the scope of views, we conducted qualitative studies at the community level in urban areas. These results are therefore mainly gen…

Perceptions on donated human milk and human milk banking in Nairobi, Kenya - Kimani‐Murage - 2019 - Maternal & Child Nutrition - Wiley Online LibraryAt a personal level, 59% of the mothers stated that they would allow their own children to be fed on donated milk from human milk banks mainly on the circumstances when they were not available to breastfeed (64%), were sick (59%), did not have enough milk for the baby (29%), or were on medication that restricted breastfeeding (10%). A slightly larger percentage (64%) of mothers from the lower income group compared with those in the higher income group (58%) would allow the use of DHM on their babies. Those of Islamic faith had the lower proportion (39%) of mothers who would allow their childre…
Perceptions on donated human milk and human milk banking in Nairobi, Kenya - Kimani‐Murage - 2019 - Maternal & Child Nutrition - Wiley Online LibraryQualitative data was translated, transcribed verbatim, and saved in Word files. The researchers familiarized themselves with the data by listening to audio tapes and reading the transcripts, from which they developed themes based on the narratives from the respondents and the research questions. The transcribed Word files were then imported into NVIVO 10 software (QSR International Pty Ltd), for coding. Coding and interpration was done by two members of the research team to ensure objectivity and to check for consistency in application of the coding process. Final checks for understanding and …
Perceptions on donated human milk and human milk banking in Nairobi, Kenya - Kimani‐Murage - 2019 - Maternal & Child Nutrition - Wiley Online LibraryPurposive sampling was used to select the participants for qualitative interviews. This sampling technique was preferred as it allowed a purposive selection of participants who are knowledgeable on breastfeeding and infant feeding practices, either through personal experiences (mothers), professional expertise (health workers), or interacting with mothers and children in the community (community leaders) or at the health facility (health workers).
Perceptions on donated human milk and human milk banking in Nairobi, Kenya - Kimani‐Murage - 2019 - Maternal & Child Nutrition - Wiley Online LibraryThe qualitative survey was conducted at the community level and at health facilities. This involved a total of 71 qualitative interviews, including 25 in-depth interviews (IDIs), 29 key informant interviews (KIIs), and 17 focus group discussions (FGDs) as detailed in Table 1.These numbers were based on saturation of the ideas sought by the research questions. For each of these interviews, participants were recruited and interviewed continuously until saturation was reached and no more new ideas were emerging, upon which recruitment of new participants was discontinued.

Perceptions on donated human milk and human milk banking in Nairobi, Kenya - Kimani‐Murage - 2019 - Maternal & Child Nutrition - Wiley Online LibraryAt a personal level, participants were more willing to donate their milk to HMBs (78%) than using DHM for their own children (59%).
Perceptions on donated human milk and human milk banking in Nairobi, Kenya - Kimani‐Murage - 2019 - Maternal & Child Nutrition - Wiley Online LibraryThere is a compelling argument to increase the supply of donor milk in middle‐income countries.
Prioritising allocation of donor human breast milk amongst very low birthweight infants in middle‐income countries - PMCFuture studies should also identify the influence of guidelines, policies, and healthcare systems on the sustainability of milk bank systems at a more general level (e.g., financial resources and impact on the environment).

Factors That Influence the Sustainability of Human Milk Donation to Milk Banks: A Systematic Review - PMCThis review does not address the factors influencing donor recruitment, why donors choose to donate, or why some women choose not to donate, as these have already been investigated [14,15]. Instead, this review advances knowledge of the factors that promote the sustainability and duration of milk donations to HMBs. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic reviews have addressed the factors influencing the sustainability of donation or the donors’ willingness and/or ability to continue donating milk.
Factors That Influence the Sustainability of Human Milk Donation to Milk Banks: A Systematic Review - PMCThe present review acknowledges the essential role of donors and explores how to maintain regular donations, which is crucial to long-term sustainability.
Factors That Influence the Sustainability of Human Milk Donation to Milk Banks: A Systematic Review - PMCHMBs need efficient strategies to enhance the DHM supply.
Factors That Influence the Sustainability of Human Milk Donation to Milk Banks: A Systematic Review - PMCHowever, with a pregnancy rate of 68·4 per 1000 adolescents, Brazil is still above the global (46 per 1000) and Latin American average (65·5 per 1000). Furthermore, 66% of these pregnancies were unintentional, and around 75% of teenage mothers were not attending school.
Preventing teenage pregnancies in Brazil - The LancetBrazil shows a decline in the percentage of live birth among adolescent mothers and the fertility rate.
Trends in teenage pregnancy in Brazil in the last 20 years (2000-2019) - PubMedBadinter23 argues that maternal love is actually a conquered feeling in which, from early in life, a variety of discursive practices molds, encourages, manipulates, and produces in women the desire to be a mother as a “natural talent.”

SciELO - Brazil - Representations of women milk donors on donations for the human milk bank Representations of women milk donors on donations for the human milk bankDonation is a complex phenomenon and is permeated with ambiguity; its value to the donor is symbolic. The donor finds gratification in self-esteem, in the belief of God’s protection, in divine love taking the form of neighborly love, or even in the correction of social21,22 or “biological” imbalances, such as the circumstance of “having too much milk,” unlike mothers who had none or were unable to breastfeed.
