It’s a lot more engaging and exciting than traditional passive instruction, and leads to higher information retention. By pairing course material with practical applications, feedback, and learner reflection, employees will be able to apply what they’ve learned to their real-world work. For example, an employee could learn about a new sales call technique in a training session, do a mock sales call as part of their training to practice the meth…

Essential components of a learning and development strategy | McKinseyThe shift to a digital, knowledge-based economy means that a vibrant workforce is more important than ever: research suggests that a very significant percentage of market capitalization in public companies is based on intangible assets—skilled employees, exceptional leaders, and knowledge.1
Essential components of a learning and development strategy | McKinseyworkflow learning and performance assistance frequently aim to address an urgent issue.
Workflow Learning and How It Differs from TrainingLearners are expected to master a body of information or a particular set of abilities. Instructional designers must offer guidance, opportunities for practice, and a way to assess competence.
Workflow Learning and How It Differs from Trainingachieving organizational goals, addressing specific issues, and altering behavior in a certain manner.
Workflow Learning and How It Differs from TrainingWorkflow learning and performance support are typically unplanned and only used when necessary. A new piece of software, a procedure they haven’t used in a while, or a new idea are all potential challenges encountered by employees. In this case, employees search for information, read or view it, and then continue with the task without missing a beat. Workflow learning can be done in a variety of ways, but it usually consists of quick, tightly focused lessons that address typical issues that crop up at work.
Workflow Learning and How It Differs from TrainingA training course could be a scheduled group class that takes place online or in person. It might also be asynchronous training or microlearning that attendees complete at their own pace.
Workflow Learning and How It Differs from TrainingWorkflow learning is typically solitary: A worker runs into a difficulty or a knowledge gap, looks for information, and then carries on. This minimizes interference with work responsibilities.
Workflow Learning and How It Differs from TrainingEmployees can effectively address urgent needs and resolve issues as a result, increasing productivity. This is the number one difference that you should keep in mind.
Workflow Learning and How It Differs from Trainingmost evident distinction between workflow learning and traditional training: Performance support and workflow learning are, by definition, tools that help employees accomplish their duties.

Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDa global shift from a training-only approach to one that intentionally enables learning in the workflow
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDThe second is when skill development occurs exclusively in the workflow. The distinguishing characteristic of that true approach to workflow learning is the degree to which employees learn as they do their work, so they don’t have to stop work to learn. In those cases, the transfer phase is immediate.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDThe first is when the TD team blends workflow learning with formal training to extend learning support across all three phases of train, transfer, and sustain.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDsustain phase is where professional growth occurs. Here, with the aid of workflow learning, employees grow through experience as they adapt their existing skill sets in response to the dynamic nature of real-world work. They accelerate their growth each time they resolve issues and develop their adaptive capacity by closing their own skills gaps in response to change.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDexperience immediate success and move rapidly through the transfer phase to transition from whatever level of skill mastery they have achieved to the beginning stages of job competence.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDLose confidence and motivation. Fall prey to the forgetting curve and quietly fail. Become overwhelmed in their thinking processes. Develop dependence on other workers. Adopt inefficient work habits.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDDuring the transfer phase, workers must reinforce what they have learned during training, translate it to their specific work environments, and integrate all they have learned with their previous experience and knowledge. That is no small feat.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDA training-only approach abandons learners during the most significant learning times that always occur during the transfer and sustain phases.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDourney to job skill productivity involves three stages: train, transfer, and sustain. Most organizations live solely in the first phase. After that, they have no intentional response to the latter two—they simply hope for the best as learners attempt to navigate through the most challenging transfer phase and then grow in experience. Workers close their own skills gaps to keep up with change during the sustain phase.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATDRegardless of the technology used, any time a TD team can orchestrate those capabilities in a way that meets all five moments of need (see Figure 2), that is an EPSS, which is sometimes referred to as a digital coach.
Workflow Learning Has a Mistaken Identity | ATD. Create Micro-Learning Experiences
Build Learning into Your Employees’ WorkflowReflection is a critical component of the learning process — and yet it is rarely built into traditional learning experiences. To create effective L&D programs, learners must be encouraged to reflect on how what they’ve learned can be embedded into the workday.
Build Learning into Your Employees’ WorkflowKeep the nudge brief and to the point — a good rule of thumb is no more than two or three sentences. Clearly link the nudge to the idea or framework that was learned — use keywords the learner has already seen in the frameworks to reinforce a consistent message. End each nudge with a call to action that encourages the learner to apply the idea as soon as possible — include a specific behavior that the recipient should undertake within a set time period to motivate near-term action based on what they’ve learned.
Build Learning into Your Employees’ Workflowcustomized learning program, managers can simply set aside a small amount of time for their teams to learn a new idea or framework, share what they have learned with their team, and discuss how it could be applied within the firm.
Build Learning into Your Employees’ Workflowwhen employees learn in the flow of work, the knowledge is contextualized within the employee’s organization and typical workflows, thus boosting retention and application. One approach to achieve this is with custom training programs, in which instructors target specific requests on an individual or team level. These programs can be effective in contextualizing learning within the organization, but they are also often expensive and time-consuming.
Build Learning into Your Employees’ WorkflowThis substantially reduces the likelihood that they’ll actually apply the new skills or knowledge in their jobs.
Build Learning into Your Employees’ Workflow, many traditional L&D programs are conducted outside the workplace, forcing the learner to transfer what they’ve learned between two very different contexts.
