"Sport really really needs to have ... an existential conversation with itself sometimes to say and reflect on the fact that they do have this role and they do have this opportunity to be a leader ... more often because they have created this momentum with hearts and minds."
'Sport needs to have an existential conversation with itself' - Sheila Nguyen | RNZ
"It is transitioning, you know the terms are transitioning, the way we think about ourselves and the world is transitioning - but also the dots are connecting. And that to me is really exciting, so that is a really foundational piece of this is that environmental health means the health of us and our wellbeing."

Four out of five oil and gas, utilities, chemicals, mining, and agribusiness executives polled by the management consultancy Bain & Company “consider the ability to create acceptable returns on projects a main barrier to decarbonization of the energy system.” While about half of oil and gas executives expect to see some decline in their core business, Bain & Company noted, they aren’t convinced that a pivot into wind and solar is worth their while

Though most consumers may not be aware of it, these pieces were carved out of the basics of social democracy, which brought together living wages, job permanence, and the sense of producing a meaningful product that will not be quickly torn apart and binned when moving day comes.
Midcentury Modern Furniture Owes Its Popularity to the Welfare State | The New Republic
Yet it was never clear how the level of quality could be maintained outside of the Scandinavian welfare state with its unique compromises between government, industry, and labor.
Midcentury Modern Furniture Owes Its Popularity to the Welfare State | The New Republic
As life became more regimented and a sense of bureaucratic ennui set in, even for the successful new white-collar workers living the life of a John Updike novel, furniture that looked natural and timeless was a relief from a world galloping into the Space Age.

By “deconstructing” the canon, English professors ultimately deconstructed the very grounds of their claim to intellectual authority. If no text is better than any other one, and if the matter of interpretation is the sole, subjective province of the individual, what do we need English professors for? Is it any coincidence that the decline of English accelerated as the attacks on the canon intensified? Basically, the discipline decided that it would deliberately refuse to teach students the transcendent wisdom that they wanted to learn.

They emphasize that the system which so many prospective students want to climb is morally indefensible—one that is concerned only with money, and one that embodies the legacy of a Western tradition that is racist, capitalist, misogynist, colonialist, xenophobic, and homophobic (and any other nasty “-ist” or “-ic” you can imagine). The professors aren’t trying to scare off students. But if someone keeps unwittingly telling you that your concerns and interests are misplaced, vain, and stupid… well, it follows that you might keep your distance.
The Real Reasons Why the English Department Died
Liberally educated professors in other disciplines often have a nostalgic reverence for the humanities and humanistic knowledge, but they know that English professors no longer serve as guardians of that tradition. In fact, it’s common knowledge that the vast majority of English faculty are resolutely opposed to traditional notions of humanistic inquiry.

hus, in the eyes of the administration, the job of the English department is remedial—getting those students “up to speed” so that they can do the writing required by their majors (which are overwhelmingly housed in other departments).

liberalism is about both recognition and non-domination
Liberalism and the problem of domination - Volker Kaul, 2023
Liberalism stands here in front of a major dilemma: Either it protects individual rights in the sense of freedom as non-domination, or it defends individual liberties in Isaiah Berlin's tradition of negative liberty– in too many cases and in too many parts of the world, liberalism, understood in the terms presented here, cannot have it both ways.

These novel things were clearly dangerous. They had the potential to act on susceptible or gullible readers “almost without the Intervention of the Will,” as Samuel Johnson warned. Taylor notes that fear of “novel-induced automatism” was then prevalent. The novel idea of the novel frightened some, who thought such books were so powerful they could corrupt readers and overcome their wills, essentially turning them into automatons. Fiction could lead to action without thinking, without moral guidance.

Foucault says that the care of the self involves living with a style, to create oneself as a work of art, in order to situate oneself correctly in the world. But this call to refuse the subjectivities imposed on us is a bit dissatisfying. It loosely resembles the way in which Burnham’s special ends: He goes outside, only to be trapped there, too.
