We don’t receive your identity data. All we receive is confirmation that you’re a real adult. We don’t want people’s personal information because we don’t want to become a target for cyberattacks or data breaches. Canada Post deletes the verification information shortly after it’s processed. For a company our size, this is the best way we’ve found to reduce bots, trolls, and fake accounts without trying to fight AI with AI.

The current Long Range Financial Plan (LRFP) is based on a 2.5 per cent increase to fares each year. Decisions by Council froze fares in 2020 and 2023, resulting in no increases. If fares are frozen in one year, and not adjusted by increasing future fares by doubling the increase, the compounded effect over the current LRFP period (2026-2048) is a shortfall of approximately $150 million. The 2025 fare increase of 5 per cent generally made up for the fare freeze in 2023.

Restaurant owners, often lacking culinary training and resources, turned to tried and tested Anglicised menus from existing restaurants. Poppadoms, onion bhajis, flock wallpaper, pink tablecloths, and waiters in bow ties were institutionalised as British curry house hallmarks from the 1970s onwards, alongside a new menu of curries that de-regionalised existing Indian dishes into an easy to understand (and easy to make) canon that ranked curries according to heat level: korma, tikka masala, jalfrezi, madras, vindaloo.

The Rise and Fall of the Curry House - Vittles
Deindustrialisation and the Bangladeshi Liberation War meant that there were suddenly many newly unemployed Bangladeshi and Pakistani workers and refugees in cities such as Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester. They identified a growing appetite for “exotic” food among young people who wanted to reject the bland diet of their parents, and decided to try their hand at running restaurants.

But to make their businesses viable from the 1960s onwards, restaurant owners had to cater to the wider population. This is where many first- and second-generation workers faced racism head on—serving white people “while absorbing their shit at the same time,”

It was common for waiters to be mocked for their accents, or to face abuse over the prices they charged.

One of the most important elements in the curry house’s growing popularity was the decision by many owners to start serving Lager alongside their food.

Now the curry could really take off, especially in the cities of London, Birmingham and Bradford. Dishes were modified to British tastes and we flocked to the restaurants for the taste of the chicken tikka masala, lamb rogan josh, the bhajis, and the vindaloos, reaching a peak in the 1980s with the launch of the wonderful Madhur Jaffery’s classic book Indian Cookery.

Little Horton, the area of south-west Bradford where the Dawood family lived, is 57% British Asian, overwhelmingly of Pakistani origin, compared with just under 20% in Bradford as a whole, according to the 2011 census. In Little Horton’s 19,996-strong local population, 35% do not have English as their main language and 12% of those are unable to speak English well or at all.

The latter riot resulted in the Ouseley Report, which noted that Bradford had become deeply divided by segregated schooling, resulting in children leaving full-time education with little knowledge of the lives of other communities.[8][9]

And then, of course, there was Bradford's most notorious son, Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, whose murderous campaign was finally halted by his chance arrest in 1981.

Bradford's image had taken a battering in the 1980s: it had lost traditional industries and jobs, there were fierce arguments about race and education, and the city suffered one of the worst British stadium tragedies when 56 football fans perished in the 1985 Valley Parade fire.

The original Bradford Coat of Arms had the Latin words Labor omnia vincit below it, meaning "Work conquers all".[64] A new coat of arms was emblazoned in 1976, after local government reorganisation in 1974, with the English motto "Progress, Industry, Humanity"

At the same time, the National Front, a far-right, fascist political party, rose in popularity. In 1977, the party won more than 100,000 votes in a Greater London election and in Bradford, NF marches and racist street activity became a regular feature of the political landscape.
