I have a recurring dream about Kenyon.
Calvin and Hobbes at Martijn's - Bill WattersonThe days are long but the decades are short.
The days are long but the decades are short - Sam Altman33) Given enough time, it is possible to adjust to almost anything, good or bad. Humans are remarkable at this.
The days are long but the decades are short - Sam Altman32) Be a doer, not a talker.

The days are long but the decades are short - Sam Altman13) Keep your personal burn rate low. This alone will give you a lot of opportunities in life.
The days are long but the decades are short - Sam AltmanMinimize your own cognitive load from distracting things that don’t really matter.

The days are long but the decades are short - Sam AltmanAnd it’s hard to be totally happy/fulfilled in life if you don’t like what you do for your work.
The days are long but the decades are short - Sam AltmanI don’t think that your taste needs to be original, but I know it needs to be personal. I love it when people choose objects that feel like them.
taste - by Ava - bookbear express. Everything will be fake, you’ll never be able to be fully open or intimate.
listening - by Ava - bookbear expressIf you find someone who only loves the mask you wear in public you’ll mess up your whole life.
listening - by Ava - bookbear expressBut I’ve also learned that I need to be with people who like to hear me talk.
listening - by Ava - bookbear expressI am glad I learned how to listen. Other people’s feelings are always more interesting to me than my own.
listening - by Ava - bookbear expressWhen I started listening I became really, undeniably lovable.
listening - by Ava - bookbear expressI started putting everything into writing instead of saying it. This accelerated the process. It made me opaque and self-contained. It gave me the self-control I craved before but couldn’t always summon.
listening - by Ava - bookbear expressnoticed the way a girl in our friend circle drew information out of people with her open, receptive manner, and I mimicked her.
listening - by Ava - bookbear expressHere’s what I know: if someone’s much better than you at something, they probably try much harder.
effort - by Ava - bookbear expressI like people who try very hard
effort - by Ava - bookbear expressYour job is to do what you like on your own terms. Your job is to keep going, to eke out good day after good day.
run your own race - by Ava - bookbear expressMy hope is to be like that in every important emotional encounter: to express my needs clearly, to be as honest as possible, and to make it clear what’s okay and what isn’t.
run your own race - by Ava - bookbear expressOn the creative level, I’m revising some writing right now, and my only goal is to hit a certain word count every day. That’s it. If I’m feeling good, I go over it, but my job is not to go under it. I don’t worry too much about whether the writing is going anywhere (existentially, lol), what anyone else is writing, or if I’m writing fast enough—I just keep going.
run your own race - by Ava - bookbear expressRun your own race, as in: you set certain standards for yourself, and you focus on meeting them.
run your own race - by Ava - bookbear expressThe really important thing I’ve realized in the last year is that if we truly love we mustn’t attach too much importance to the things that the people we love do. We need them; they alone mean we can live in a particular ‘atmosphere’ (your friend Hélène calls it a ‘climate’ and that’s exactly right) that we can’t get by without. So long as we can keep them, hold on to them, good God, what does the rest matter?
getting love right - by Ava - bookbear expressI think that when you really love someone, you always keep loving them.
getting love right - by Ava - bookbear expressIf you can consistently get in the habit of saying what you want to say, you’ll realize it’s a strength and not a vulnerability. Everyone loves someone who is self-aware enough to disclose the ugly things about themselves.
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by AvaBut people do not change because we hope they will. They change when they’re ready.
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by Avado not personally try to change them
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by AvaA good test for this: can you maintain boundaries when you’re around people you love? Do you behave in a way you feel happy with, or do you betray yourself?
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by AvaBut if you’re sufficiently differentiated, you don’t need to fuse to feel safe, and you don’t need to hide to maintain your own individuality.
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by AvaSchnarch defines self-differentiation as the ability to “maintain who you are while you’re *close* to the people important to you.
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by AvaThe realest thing in the world is the void, is emptiness, is transience.
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by Avaowe him a debt of gratitude I don’t think I can ever repay him.
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by AvaI plan to live near them, call them when we’re in different places, raise my children around them. I love them a lot.
how to have healthier relationships (?!) - by AvaSomething I want to be intentional about: crafting my spare moments. The decisions we make for how we use spare time… waiting in a lot… using the washroom… time between meetings… build our personalities as much as the big projects or adventures. I want that time to be a wise reflection of who I am and who I’ll become.

Pursue Mastery, Not StatusIf you base the quality of your work on its performance – and not how you felt while creating it – then you will never be confident in your own judgment.
Pursue Mastery, Not StatusThe key here is to continue seeing status for the societal poison that it is, and to resist its allure.
Pursue Mastery, Not StatusStatus is always relational, so external validation is a prerequisite to feeling secure. Mastery, on the other hand, is gauged by your unique sense of progress, which can only be derived from within.
Pursue Mastery, Not StatusMastery is the quest to improve yourself as an end in itself. Comparisons are not made with other people, but only with prior versions of yourself.
Pursue Mastery, Not StatusYoung artists have been taught to be "cool" and "hip" and thus painfully self-conscious. They are not encouraged to be enthusiastic, emotional, and visionary.

Things You Learn Dating Cate Hall - by Sasha ChapinThis means that she knows a lot about herself, what she is like relationally, her environment, the people around her, and the world, and the benefits of that learning keep compounding—her large volume of general knowledge makes it easier for her to keep picking up specifics.
Things You Learn Dating Cate Hall - by Sasha ChapinThis mentality enables her to approach potentially intimidating enterprises with eager open-mindedness; she is always willing to ask dumb questions, think from first principles, and look for ways to improve.
Things You Learn Dating Cate Hall - by Sasha Chapin“it’s so corny, but believing that you can do it really is centrally important.”
Things You Learn Dating Cate Hall - by Sasha ChapinThis is not an advice column, but if you’re looking to set some kind of resolution this year, I highly recommend choosing an easy behavioral thing. Just do it every day and prepare for it to be really disappointing on some days, like if you have a workout where you’re really weak and have trouble properly calibrating your smart trainer and end up shouting at an inanimate object and walk away with lower back pain. 🤷🏻♀️
new year's resolutions - by Ava - bookbear expressBasically, every self-help books explains that in order to be good at something you have to do it again and again and again.
new year's resolutions - by Ava - bookbear expressFor me, the magic moment was when I realized that I’m the kind of person who needs to make rules in order to get anything done. I don’t like repetition, but I can’t function without it.
