So far, this is a description of the symptoms, I haven’t put here why this is happening.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | Mediumso… I want you to apply isomorphy to each one and ask yourself:
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumThere’s no room to be creative in an organization like this. It’s too busy producing.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumNote: This is a list of symptoms. You are unlikely to be experiencing them all.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumConcepts Applied Now I apply the concepts to try and go a bit deeper into what is going on within the organization.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumAll this means is that real world systems exhibit self-similar behavior across scales. What this looks like in organizations is — say a particular team is having trouble deciding what direction to move in. Then we might also find that the department is having trouble deciding what direction to move in, and that the organization as a whole has trouble deciding what direction to move in. The reason this happens is that the forces that act on the organization as a whole “replicate” at a smaller scale internally to create the same forces acting on a smaller structure of an organization. A simple e…
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumApplying isomorphy to organizations means that what we learn about the function of a department (how it discriminates and integrates information) helps us understand how the work teams within the department function and also how the larger organization in which the department is nested functions.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumAnother important construct in the theory of living human systems is isomorphy [adapted from Bertalanffy (1969) and general systems theory]. Defining systems as isomorphic defines the structure and function of all systems in a specified hierarchy as equivalent. Structure is operationally defined as system boundaries. Boundaries are permeable or impermeable to energy. Energy in living human systems, borrowing from Miller (1978), is equated with information. Systems-centered defines function as the process by which living human systems discriminate and integrate information. Thus structure and f…
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | Mediumif an alien with zero context observed you and your org’s behavior, what might they conclude the goal of your system is? What does the behavior of your organization say about humanity and human beings? What does the behavior of your organization say that the purpose of life is (or what the “ideal” life is)? What does your system seek to preserve or maintain? What is it willing to sacrifice to preserve and maintain those things? (again behavior, not what people say) When the organization is disturbed (by any unplanned internal or external disturbance) what does it move towards?
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumSystem goals are about where your behavior is taking you. The point is that whatever behavior we are seeing is being motivated by something, somewhere.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumWhat’s going on? My spidey senses went off with this situation — individuals want one thing, but the collective is ending up with something completely different. This smells like …. systems!
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumSomething’s clearly not right with this picture. Organizations talk about innovation and new ideas and wanting to do the best by their customers … and then somehow in the process of trying to make that happen end up with something … not.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | Medium“Life feels like a conveyor belt of production. I’m just producing things, there’s not really much creativity going on.” “My manager thinks I’m a golden goose who will lay an egg if she scares me enough.” “No one actually understands what I do, and they don’t want my skills, they just want [some basic activities] done.” “By the time the project starts we have to have everything already figured out. My job is just to do what we’ve already decided. My ideas aren’t really that important.”
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | Mediumwhere there aren’t good questions or good answers, and it’s your role to find them,
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumTry to read this as “could some of this apply to me/my org?” not “this is a total description of what is happening in the world.” I’m writing about one effect here, and there are many!
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumHere I’m just going to talk about the system itself and ask you to imply the asterisks and disclaimers on everything. Treat it like a symptom list on WebMD — you probably won’t have all the symptoms even if you have the disease.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumThe point of this article is: look how the system reinforces itself. Not “look how silly people are.”
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | Mediumwhere the spirit of the work gets lost and the momentum of industrial organizations takes over.
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumThen get 15–20 of us together for a meeting and …. what happened!?
How Fear Wins Over Creativity: Symptoms | by Vishesh | Sep, 2022 | MediumThe way that the arts have historically been devalued in the academy at large mimics the structural relation of art maker to art thinker in the discipline of art history itself, which too often presumes that artistic practice, while it can be seen as a vehicle for research or thinking with the capacity to seriously impact rather than only express or reflect social experiences and issues, still fails the benchmark of rigor and accountability to which academics hold themselves.

Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the WorldI mobilize research-creation as a mode of resistance to individualist, careerist, and bibliometric university cultures.
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the WorldAre art schools just trying to survive by widening their market and access to public funds through accreditation? Or, from the university side, are universities simply using art as an attempt to render research outcomes “relatable”?
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the World“add women and stir”—a tokenistic gesture of inclusion that does nothing to change the logics that structure these exclusions in the first place.1
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the Worldthe question of the status of art as itself a form of research.
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the WorldSocial Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the primary humanities and social sciences funding body in Canada.7
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the WorldResearch-creation is a geographically specific term that works in tandem with alternatives such as practice-based research, practice-led research, research-based practice, research-led practice, creative-praxis, arts-driven inquiry, arts-based research, and, increasingly, artistic research. This ever-growing roster speaks to the ways that artistic practices come to be understood as research methods and outputs in university contexts
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the Worldresearch-creation, the Université de Québec a Montréal (UQAM) had already started the first fine arts PhD in Canada (in French), and in the UK doctoral degrees in the fine arts were already being awarded.

Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the Worldcommitted, cathected, and sustaining.
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the Worldinsidious evisceration of experimental pedagogy and research
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the WorldI begin by situating research-creation—a sister term to what is often called artistic research—within a local context, that of the Canadian university in which I currently teach.
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the Worldhas been called the educational or pedagogical turn (Bishop 2012; O’Neill and Wilson 2010; Podesva 2007; Rog-off 2008).2
Art in the Expanded Field | Literature, the Humanities, & the WorldThere are many beautiful things in this world, but I am not sure one of them. I catalog and collect my aesthetic convictions hoping they’ll belong to me. The tension I feel in my chest when I listen to music may be the only evidence I have a soul. But I don’t think of souls so much these days. I don’t care what lies after death, and, frankly, it is none of my business.

Dear writer: Advice on cultivating connection in the internet ageWriting is like running, I’ve found: if you only do it once in a while, it sucks and hurts, but if you do it every day, at some point it’ll start to feel easy. Natural, even.

As I Breathe Amongst Other Neurosis - by Lor - Cont. MoodWhen a time, an interest, a person, what have you, seems irreparably a part of you and so fiercely joyful, the knowledge that it is temporary is only remedied by the promise of forever.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. MoodWe cannot imagine such joys when they are absent, thus the incentive for seeking them is lacking.”
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. MoodWe are brought up in the ethic that others, any others, all others, are by definition more interesting than ourselves; taught to be diffident, just this side of self-effacing.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. MoodI still get along with everyone. I have never been an angry or confrontational person (good girl), but it is different now. I never had anyone who was interested in me until this fall. I value those new relationships more than I can express.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. MoodBut you see, if someone is not invested in you, you could be anyone. I realized the people I was intimately close to wanted my attention more than who I was. I could be their friend, spouse, or grocery store cashier and they would get the same thing. I began to feel like a commodity. These people demanded my time, talked behind my back if I was reluctant to do so, and passive-aggressively criticized me for being alone, or with my friends or partner.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. Mooda) If they are not invested in you, your needs will never be met. b) You limit who you can become by keeping company that does not grow with yo
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. Moodlearning the difference between love, interest, and attention. People who love you unconditionally give all three, anything less is broken love.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. Mood“Can I put this bluntly,” I said yes, “your mother doesn’t know that because she is not interested in you.”
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. MoodBecoming an adult means becoming your own person.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. MoodThey do not know I am closer to a queer witch than a good Christian girl. A bisexual, tattooed, astrology obsessed girl who lost her virginity two days before college, to be precise.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. MoodGood girls, smart girls do not act silly, do not complain, and do not share unless asked. Good girls, smart girls fantasize about promise rings, make no lower than an A-, and do not drink.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. MoodIn their company, I was the shy trophy of my parents.
Good Girl - by Lor - Cont. Moodsuspect that he wants to appeal to a select audience that’s willing to put some mental work into interpreting his system. This is insurance against someone frying their brain with a simplistic misunderstanding of a complex, error-prone psychological technique
