One former freelancer who said she did work for wikiHow “a long long time ago” recalled earning a flat rate of 20,000 Philippine pesos per month, about US$395. Another, who listed working for the company from 2014–2015, told me he got $1 per image. A third, who quit freelancing for wikiHow in 2016 after three months, told me he was paid just $.40 cents per image by a third-party broker.

It was so worth the cost, we did it at scale. Over four years we ended up doing 1.4 million custom visuals, and those are live on over 150,000 of our articles.

But why has it taken root? Why do business men and women want to believe that trustworthiness pays, disregarding considerable evidence to the contrary? The answer lies firmly in the realm of social and moral behavior, not in finance.

Not all systems need the same levels of transparency. While it might not be possible to standardize algorithms or even XAI approaches, it might certainly be possible to standardize levels of transparency / levels of explainability as per requirements. Product recommendation systems, for example, need to have very little requirement for transparency and so might accept a lower level of transparency.
Understanding Explainable AI
The lack of explainability and trust hampers our ability to fully trust AI systems. We want computer systems to work as expected and produce transparent explanations and reasons for decisions they make. This is known as Explainable AI (XAI).

There is a tradeoff between preventing more disputes (false negatives) and reducing blocking legitimate customers (false positives)—the fewer you have of the former, the more you need to tolerate of the latter (and vice versa). When you prevent more fraud, you’ll increase the number of good customers blocked. On the other hand, reducing the number of false positives often increases the likelihood of more true fraud slipping through the cracks.
Stripe: Radar Technical Guide
False positives, or false declines, are when a legitimate customer tries to make a purchase but is prevented from doing so. False declines can cause the business to take both a gross profit and reputational hit. In fact, in a recent survey, 33% of consumers said they wouldn’t shop again at a business after a false decline.

That’s why we built Stripe Radar, a machine learning-based fraud prevention solution, fully integrated within the Stripe platform. Radar’s machine learning leverages the data from hundreds of billions of dollars in payments processed across the Stripe network each year to accurately detect fraud and quickly adapt to the latest trends, enabling you to grow without increasing fraud.

Musical trends produced in the streaming era are inherently connected to attention, whether it’s hard-and-fast attention-grabbing hooks, pop drops and chorus-loops engineered for the pleasure centers of our brains, or music that strategically requires no attention at all—the background music, the emotional wallpaper, the chill-pop-sad-vibe playlist fodder. These sounds and strategies all have streambait tricks embedded within them, whether they aim to wedge bits of a song into our skulls or just angle toward the inoffensive and mood-specific-enough to prevent users from clicking away. Although step-out moves were the most common form of new business entry we observed, they were far from the most successful. Just 22 percent of those we studied had a beneficial impact on revenue growth, profits, and market share relative to those of competitors.

Fully 49 percent were step-out moves into businesses completely unrelated to the parent companies’ existing activities—for example, a South Korean chemical company acquiring a life insurer or a Chinese mining group’s expansion into the media industry.

The average rate of revenue growth for companies that entered at least one new business over the period we studied was 25 percent a year—more than two times higher than the revenue growth of companies that didn’t.

In Japan, there are 500,000 bus stops nationwide with nearly 90 per cent with no power supply. This means an off-the-grid, cost effective installation is a requirement for the project. By combining E Ink low power display technology with low power, wide area (LPWA) wireless technology, the bus stop displays can be easily installed using solar power only – without power or network cables.

The fact that a Super Bowl ad is such a public waste of dollars is the exact reason it has value. That value comes via something biologists call signaling. Similar to the way in which humans broadcast their status via fancy watches, German cars and Facebook photos from far-flung vacation locales, so a brand’s ability to spend $5 million in 30 seconds is one of the more confident demonstrations of its health and vitality. In other words, signaling.

Now, these scientists want to use genetic engineering to accelerate their growth rate so they could reach “old growth” status in just 20 to 50 years, absorbing more carbon in less time. Additionally, carbon stored in roots is trapped beneath the soil even if the tree is chopped down, dies, or burns. Trees enhanced with extra-deep roots could stow away more carbon.
