What I like about Boston (or rather Cambridge) is that the message there is: you should be smarter. You really should get around to reading all those books you've been meaning to.

Over the decades I’ve been on the internet, I’ve admired bloggers. It’s beautiful to write on one’s own platform about anything that interests you. Especially when that writing wouldn’t easily be accepted on a platform that already exists. But I’ve often felt like an outsider. That is, I never felt like a blogger myself. (specifically: “Beaker Browser”) because the technology enabled me saving offline and then it syncing whenever I was online. I’ve kept it up for ~3 years now, posting intermittently … whenever I’m on a train, plane, boat, or even walking. I gave a talk about this notebook once, and I keep references surrounding it, too.

While playing Elden Ring I read Anil Seth's Being You: A New Science of Consciousness. There's a part in the book that brings up 20th century art historian Ernst Gombrich's concept of the beholder's share (though first brought up by fellow art historian Alois Riegl). Seth describes it as “that part of perceptual experience that is contributed by the perceiver and which is not to be found in the artwork – or the world – itself.” In other words, it's the observer who creatively “completes” the artwork. Impressionist paintings are an example of the beholder's share in action. Seth explains that, …

Make sure at least one of your letter writers can speak to your skills as a TA.
Does being a TA as an undergrad help your chances of getting into grad school? : gradadmissions
To other people who might ask, I would say you shouldn’t become a TA for the sole purpose of getting into grad school (for most fields like in STEM, research is much more important). Since you’ve already done it, and given your background as you’ve described it, yes I think it will help your chances.

Understand that the whole process is pretty chaotic and is characterized by an unfortunate mix of high stakes, conflicting goals, and partial information. Timing effects, departmental politics, and personalities matter a lot. Most of this will be opaque to you, giving the (generally correct) impression of randomness.

Collapse informatics is software engineering taking advantage of today's abundance in computing power to prepare for a future in which current infrastructures have collapsed.
XXIIVV — permacomputing
Permacomputing does not advocate for going back in time, despite advocating a dramatic decrease in use of artificial energy, but trusts in human ingenunity to finding clever hacks for turning problems into solutions, competition into co-operation and waste into resources.

Luddism was a working-class movement opposed to the political consequences of industrial capitalism. The Luddites wanted technology to be deployed in ways that made work more humane and gave workers more autonomy. The bosses, on the other hand, wanted to drive down costs and increase productivity. Smashing looms and stocking frames was the tactic, not their goal. Their goal was to challenge not the technology itself, but rather the social relations that governed its use.
XXIIVV — sabotage
The end of work is the upcoming abstraction and machine automation of mostly all that is currently understood as work. Inside capitalism, the critical moment is specifically where technology meets capital: who gets to own this capital; the "factory without the worker".

I asked one Amish person why they didn’t use automobiles. He simply smiled and turned to me and said, “Look what they did to your society.” And I asked what do you mean? “Well, do you know your neighbor? Do you know the names of your neighbors?” And, at the time, I had to admit to the fact that I didn’t.

In The Dark Forest, the two assumptions of life are this: living organisms want to stay alive, and there is no way to know the true intentions of other lifeforms.

Walking beneath the electric lights draws attention to yourself so the safest option is to keep hidden, avoiding people and assuming the worst of them until daylight arrives. But there’s a difference between the cityscape of Earth and the cosmic streets of the universe: in the universe daylight will never come. There’s no locked home to go to and no policemen to seek out for safety. There’s only the potential for danger, and the inability to know the other civilization’s true intent.

The social media user does not post for enjoyment, they enjoy the indulgent masochism of its dopamine exhaustion, they indulge in it as they do a deep autumn depression, with an unconsciously mechanical action which draws them from their potential as a Being. Stripped to the core there is nothing new here, what is found once more is one's lust for sleep.~
XXIIVV — technology
We indulge in the continual debasement of our attention and energy, get emotionally giddy as its squandered to the ignorant masses. We indulge in its narcistic promotion, revel in slowly becoming a greater center of attention; a center that becomes defined by various artificially created boundaries.

A journal is an item to be cherished and cared for, it must travel with you if you are to be able to use it. The interconnected age has destroyed some of the special relationship with the item of the journal by allowing you to make entries at any time from any medium. Almanac tries to restore some of this special relationship by insisting that if you are to fill it, it must travel with you.

When it’s a topic I understand well, I can write notes for both myself and an audience simultaneously. But that sometimes produces the false impression that I can pull this off all the time! To avoid that false impression, I’ll write notes for myself “by default,” and only “opt into” writing notes for an audience explicitly.
